Description

Garden Lime & Agricultural Lime: A Natural Soil pH Adjuster for Healthier Plants

Garden lime (agricultural lime) is a natural soil conditioner made from finely ground limestone, or calcium carbonate. It's used to raise the pH of acidic soil so plants can take up nutrients more easily, while also improving soil structure. It suits vegetable beds, lawns, flower gardens, orchards and farm paddocks.

Much of Australia's soil is naturally acidic, and acidity tends to build up over time in areas with heavy rainfall. Acidic soil locks up nutrients and holds plants back. By lifting the soil's pH into a healthier range, lime releases those locked-up nutrients, supports stronger root systems, and encourages the soil microbes that keep your garden productive. The calcium in lime also plays a direct role in plant cell strength.

This is calcitic lime, so it's primarily calcium carbonate rather than the calcium-and-magnesium blend you get from dolomite. That makes it a good choice when your soil needs a pH lift and added calcium without extra magnesium.

How to Use Garden Lime

For the best result, test your soil's pH before applying, since over-liming can push soil too alkaline and cause its own problems. As a rough garden guide, lime is often applied at around 80 to 160 grams per square metre once a year, using more for vegetables and less for flowers, but always follow the rate suited to your soil test and crop.

Spread it evenly by hand or with a spreader, then work it into the topsoil and water in. In Australia, autumn or winter is a common time to apply, which gives the pH time to adjust before the growing season. Keep lime away from acid-loving plants such as azaleas, camellias, blueberries and potatoes, which prefer slightly acidic soil. When handling lime, gloves and a dust mask are sensible.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is garden lime used for?
Garden lime raises the pH of acidic soil, which frees up locked nutrients, improves soil structure and adds calcium. It's used across lawns, vegetable beds, gardens and farm soils to create healthier growing conditions.

What's the difference between garden lime and agricultural lime?
They're the same product. "Garden lime" and "agricultural lime" both refer to finely ground calcitic limestone (calcium carbonate). The garden label usually just points to smaller pack sizes for home use.

Garden lime vs dolomite, which should I use?
Garden lime is mainly calcium carbonate, so it lifts pH and adds calcium. Dolomite adds magnesium as well. If your soil is low in magnesium, dolomite may suit better; otherwise garden lime is the standard choice for raising pH.

How do I add lime to soil naturally?
Test your soil pH first, spread the lime evenly by hand or with a spreader, then mix it into the topsoil and water it in. Apply in autumn or winter so the pH can adjust before planting, and avoid over-applying.

Can I use lime on a vegetable garden?
Yes. Many vegetables, especially brassicas, peas and beans, do well in limed soil. Avoid liming around acid-loving crops like potatoes, capsicums and berries, which prefer more acidic conditions.

What sizes does it come in?
It's available in 1kg, 2kg, 4kg and 25kg, with the 25kg bag suited to lawns, larger gardens and farm use.

Where can I buy agricultural lime in Australia?
You can buy it online from BPG Supplies in sizes from 1kg up to 25kg, with delivery available Australia-wide.
