Fertiliser puts back the nutrients that plants use up, so roots grow strong, leaves stay green and plants flower and fruit well. How to Choose the Right Fertiliser

Start with the plant. Lawns and leafy vegetables want plenty of nitrogen (N) for green growth. Flowering and fruiting plants need more potassium (K), and phosphorus (P) supports roots. The three NPK numbers on the bag tell you the balance.

Then choose the speed. Liquid fertilisers work within days, granular fertilisers feed over weeks, and controlled-release products can feed for months from one application. For native plants, always choose a low-phosphorus fertiliser.

Lawn Fertilisers

A thick, green lawn needs regular feeding in spring and autumn. Incitec Pivot No. 17 Lawn Food, Neutrog Sudden Impact for Lawns and Brunnings Green Up are popular all-rounders. Urea and sulphate of ammonia give a fast green-up when watered in straight away.

Manutec Iron Sulphate deepens lawn colour and helps control moss. If weeds are the problem, treat them first with a selective lawn product from our herbicides range, then feed the lawn so the grass fills the gaps.

Organic and Manure-Based Fertilisers

Organic fertilisers feed plants and build healthy soil at the same time. Yates AgriBoost Long Life Complete combines composted poultry manure, blood and bone, fish meal and seaweed with added nutrients, for vegetables, flowers, shrubs and trees. Brunnings Ultimate Chicken Manure and Yates AgriBoost pellets are other good-value choices.

Brunnings Blood & Bone is a traditional slow-release feed for garden beds, roses, fruit trees and shrubs, available up to 20kg bags. Neutrog Kahoona and Sudden Impact for Roses are pelletised organic feeds that gardeners rely on year after year.

Liquid Fertilisers and Seaweed

For quick results, liquid fertilisers are taken up fast through roots and leaves. PowerFeed, Yates Aquasol, Maxicrop and Bonzer feed seedlings, vegetables, pots and indoor plants. Seasol seaweed tonic helps plants settle after transplanting and cope with heat, frost and dry spells.

Apply liquids with a watering can, hose-on bottle or garden sprayer. Choose David Grays Liquid Blood & Bone for an organic liquid option.

Controlled-Release Fertilisers and Spikes

Controlled-release granules feed a little at a time, so one application lasts for months. Yates Nutricote N16 Blue releases over about 140 days for pots, gardens and nursery stock, and Scotts Osmocote is a favourite for pots, planters and native gardens. Manutec fertiliser spikes make feeding indoor and potted plants easy.

Bulk and Water-Soluble Fertilisers for Growers

For farms, market gardens and hydroponics, we stock Incitec Pivot MultiGro, Banana Special and Superphosphate in 25kg bags. Water-soluble options include YaraTera Calcinit and Krista K Plus, Haifa Poly-Feed, MAP and MKP, SoluPotasse sulphate of potash and Miller Nutri-Leaf. Epsom salts and BASF Librel chelates correct magnesium and trace element deficiencies.

Lime, Dolomite and Soil Conditioners

Fertiliser works best when soil pH is right. Mudgee High Grade Dolomite raises the pH of acid soils and adds calcium and magnesium, and agricultural and garden lime also raise pH. Tips for Using Fertiliser

Water the soil before and after applying granular fertiliser, and keep granules off leaves to avoid burning. Always follow the rates on the pack, because more fertiliser doesn't mean better growth and can damage roots.

Feed most plants during active growth in spring, summer and early autumn, and ease off in winter. Test soil pH every year or two so you know whether lime or sulphur is needed.
