Description

Seedling Mix with Peat Moss 80L: Fine 50/50 Peat and Perlite Seed Raising Mix

This Seedling Mix is a premium fine growing medium made from a 50/50 blend of peat moss and perlite, designed to give seeds and cuttings the best possible start. Seed raising has different needs to normal potting: young seeds and delicate new roots want a light, fine, free-draining medium that holds moisture without going heavy or waterlogged, and that is exactly what this blend delivers. The peat moss holds consistent moisture around the germinating seed, while the perlite keeps the mix open and airy so oxygen reaches the roots and excess water drains away.

The fine texture is important for seed raising. A fine, uniform mix gives small seeds close, even contact with moisture, which encourages faster and more uniform germination, and lets tiny emerging roots push through easily. The generous 50 per cent perlite content makes this a notably free-draining, airy mix, which helps protect delicate seedlings from the damping-off and rot that ruin so many seed trays when the medium stays too wet.

It suits seed raising trays, punnets, propagation of cuttings and pricking out seedlings, and works across vegetables, flowers and herbs. The 80L bag is an economical size for anyone raising a lot of seedlings, with a smaller 10L bag available for occasional propagating.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Fine 50/50 blend of peat moss and perlite made for seed raising

  • Peat moss holds steady moisture for reliable germination

  • High perlite content keeps the mix airy and free-draining

  • Fine, uniform texture for faster, more even germination

  • Helps protect delicate seedlings from waterlogging and damping-off

  • Ideal for seed trays, punnets, cuttings and pricking out seedlings

  • Suits vegetables, flowers and herbs

  • Available in 80L and 10L bags

How to Use

Fill clean seed trays, punnets or propagation cells with the mix and lightly firm it, then sow your seeds at the depth recommended on the seed packet. Water gently, ideally from below or with a fine mist so you don't disturb the seeds, and keep the mix consistently moist but never sopping wet while seeds germinate. Once seedlings have their first true leaves, you can prick them out into larger cells or pots. When transplanting into the garden or bigger containers, move them into a standard potting or garden mix, since seed raising mix is designed for germination rather than long-term feeding.

Getting the Best From It

  • Keep it moist, not wet. The free-draining blend is forgiving, but the surface can dry quickly. A cover or propagation lid over the tray helps hold humidity until seeds sprout.

  • Water from below where you can. Standing trays in a little water lets the mix wick moisture up without dislodging fine seeds or compacting the surface.

  • Feed once true leaves appear. Seed raising mixes are low in nutrients by design. A weak liquid feed once seedlings have their first true leaves keeps them growing until you pot them on.

  • Use clean trays. Starting with clean, rinsed trays and fresh mix reduces the risk of damping-off disease in young seedlings.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is this seed raising mix made of?
It is a fine 50/50 blend of peat moss and perlite. The peat holds moisture for germination and the perlite keeps the mix airy and free-draining.

What can I use it for?
It is ideal for raising seeds in trays and punnets, striking cuttings and pricking out seedlings, across vegetables, flowers and herbs.

Why use a seed raising mix instead of potting mix?
Seed raising mix is finer, lighter and more free-draining than potting mix, which suits delicate seeds and new roots and encourages even germination. Potting mix is coarser and richer, better suited to established plants.

Do I need to fertilise seedlings grown in it?
Seed raising mixes are naturally low in nutrients. Once seedlings have their first true leaves, a weak liquid feed helps them along until you transplant them into a richer mix.

How much does the 80L bag cover?
The 80L bag fills a large number of seed trays and punnets, making it economical for anyone raising a lot of seedlings. The 10L bag suits smaller, occasional propagating.

Where can I buy this seed raising mix in Australia?
It is available from BPG Supplies in 80L and 10L sizes, with local pickup in Bonnyrigg, NSW and delivery options at checkout. Current pricing for each size is shown on this page.
