Choosing the Right Bird Food

Different birds need very different diets. Seed-eaters such as budgies, finches and canaries do well on a quality seed mix with greens and grit. Larger parrots benefit from pellets plus fruit and vegetables. Lorikeets are nectar feeders and need a specialised nectar diet, not seed.

Whatever you feed, offer fresh food and clean water every day, and change your bird's diet gradually over a week or two.

Seed Mixes and Straight Seeds

Tips for Feeding Birds

Store seed and pellets sealed in a cool, dry, vermin-proof container, and check for a musty or rancid smell before feeding. Blow the husks off seed dishes daily so birds don't go hungry beside a bowl of empty shells.

Are pellets better than seed for parrots?

Pellets give a more consistent balance of nutrients, because birds can't pick out only their favourite seeds. Many owners feed pellets as the base of the diet, with seed as a treat and plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.

What should I feed my lorikeet?

Lorikeets need a nectar-based diet, such as Shep's Lori-Wet and Lorikeet Dry, plus fresh fruit. Seed isn't suitable as their main food.

Do budgies and finches need grit?

Seed-eating birds benefit from grit, which helps them grind seed and supplies calcium. Offer a small dish of bird grit, and replace it regularly so it stays clean.

How should I store bird seed?

Keep seed in a sealed container in a cool, dry place, away from sunlight and rodents. Buy an amount you'll use within a few months, and throw out any seed that smells musty or rancid.

Can you send bird seed to WA or Tasmania?

No. Quarantine rules prevent us from sending seed products to Western Australia or Tasmania. Pellets, nectar foods and other products may still be available for delivery where eligible.
