Yates Success Ultra Insect Control 200mL: Next-Generation Caterpillar and Pest Control
Yates Success Ultra is a concentrated insecticide built around spinetoram, an active derived from beneficial soil bacteria. It's the next-generation replacement for Success Naturalyte, and it's especially strong on caterpillars and other leaf-eating pests across vegetables, fruit trees, herbs and ornamentals. You dilute it with water and spray, and a single 200mL bottle makes a lot of spray, so it works out economical across a whole garden.
What It Controls
It targets a broad range of chewing and leaf-eating pests, including caterpillars (cabbage white butterfly and tomato grub included), codling moth, thrips, pear and cherry slug, citrus leaf miner and tomato potato psyllid. It's registered for use across a wide spread of edibles and ornamentals, which is why it tends to be a go-to when caterpillars are chewing through a veggie patch or fruit trees.
How It Works
Spinetoram works on the insect's nervous system through both contact and ingestion, so pests are affected whether they're hit by the spray or feed on treated leaves. It also has translaminar movement, meaning it moves into the leaf tissue rather than just sitting on the surface. That's what makes it rainfast once it has dried, roughly six hours after application, and helps it reach pests hiding on the undersides of leaves. One thing worth knowing: treated insects stop feeding almost immediately, so the damage to your plants halts straight away, but they can take up to three days to actually die. That's normal, not a sign it isn't working.
How to Mix and Apply
Shake well before use and keep the mix agitated while spraying. As a general guide, the rate is around 5mL per litre of water for vegetables and fruit, and up to 10mL per litre for ornamentals and roses, but always follow the specific rate on the label for your plant and pest. A 200mL bottle makes up to around 40 litres of spray for a vegetable garden. Spray evenly over the foliage to the point of run-off, covering both the upper and lower leaf surfaces, and apply in the cool of the early morning or late evening.
When Not to Spray
Don't spray when shade temperatures are near 28°C or higher, or when the soil is dry and plants are already stressed for moisture. Avoid spraying in windy conditions, which causes drift, and don't spray if rain is likely within six hours, since it needs that time to dry and become rainfast.
Withholding Periods
Because it's used on food crops, check the harvest interval for what you're spraying. The key periods on the label are: do not pick coffee, grapes, kiwifruit or pome fruit (apples and pears) for 7 days after spraying; do not pick brassicas, cucurbits, culinary herbs, leafy vegetables, legume vegetables, root and tuber vegetables or stone fruit for 3 days after spraying. Bananas and most subtropical and tropical fruit have no withholding period when used as directed. Always confirm the interval for your specific crop on the pack before harvesting.
Bees, Fish and Safety
This is important and worth getting right. Spinetoram is highly toxic to bees while the spray is still wet, so do not spray plants that are in flower while bees are feeding on them. Applying in the early morning or late evening, when bees aren't foraging, lets the spray dry before they're active, which greatly reduces the risk. It's also toxic to fish, so keep it away from drains, streams and ponds and avoid drift near water. Keep children and pets out of sprayed areas until the spray has fully dried.
Resistance Management
Like any insecticide, overusing a single active can let pests build resistance. To keep it working, use it strictly to label and rotate it with insecticides from a different chemical group rather than relying on it alone season after season.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does Yates Success Ultra control?
Caterpillars (including cabbage white butterfly and tomato grub), codling moth, thrips, pear and cherry slug, citrus leaf miner and tomato potato psyllid, across a wide range of edibles and ornamentals.
What is the active ingredient?
Spinetoram, a next-generation active derived from beneficial soil bacteria. It works through both contact and ingestion.
What is the mixing rate?
As a guide, about 5mL per litre of water for vegetables and fruit, and up to 10mL per litre for ornamentals and roses. A 200mL bottle makes up to around 40 litres of spray. Always use the exact rate on the label for your plant and pest.
How quickly does it work?
Pests stop feeding almost immediately, so plant damage stops straight away, but they can take up to three days to die. That delay is normal.
Is it rainfast?
Yes. Thanks to its translaminar action, it moves into the leaf and becomes rainfast once it has dried, about six hours after spraying.
What is the withholding period?
It depends on the crop. It's 7 days for pome fruit, grapes, kiwifruit and coffee, and 3 days for brassicas, leafy vegetables, herbs, cucurbits, legumes, root vegetables and stone fruit. Check the pack for your specific crop.
Is it safe for bees?
It's highly toxic to bees while the spray is wet, so don't spray flowering plants that bees are working. Spraying early morning or late evening lets it dry before bees are active, which greatly lowers the risk.
