Yates Baythroid Advanced Insect Killer for Lawns 50mL: Lawn Grub & Surface Pest Control
Yates Baythroid Advanced Insect Killer for Lawns is a highly concentrated insecticide that kills most lawn surface pests. It contains 25 g/L beta-cyfluthrin, a synthetic pyrethroid that works on contact with fast knockdown, so pests are dealt with quickly before they chew through more of your lawn.
Being a concentrate, it's mixed with water and applied through a garden sprayer or watering can. It's more concentrated than the original Baythroid formulation, which means lower mixing rates and better value per treatment.
What It Controls
-
Lawn grubs, including armyworm, cutworm and webworm
-
Adult scarabs, including African black beetle
-
Adult billbug and adult Argentine stem weevil
-
Mole crickets
-
Couch mite
-
Ants and grasshoppers
How to Mix and Apply
For lawn grubs:
-
Garden sprayer: mix 20 mL in 5 litres of water and spray evenly over 50 m² of lawn
-
Watering can: mix 8 mL in 9 litres of water and water evenly over 20 m² of lawn
Getting the best result comes down to a few practical steps that a lot of people skip:
-
Mow the lawn first. Applying to a freshly mown lawn stops the insecticide being lost with the clippings next time you mow.
-
Lightly water the lawn before applying. This brings grubs closer to the surface and helps the product move into the thatch where they're feeding.
-
Apply late in the afternoon. Lawn grubs feed at night, so an evening application means the treatment is fresh when they come up.
-
On dense lawns treated with a sprayer, lightly water again afterwards to move the product down through the thatch.
-
Repeat the treatment if needed.
Only mix as much spray as you'll use on the day.
Important Safety Information
This is a pyrethroid insecticide and the label carries some serious warnings that are worth taking seriously:
-
Bees: Do not spray if bees are feeding on flowering plants. This product will kill bees. Treat when bees aren't active, and avoid any flowering weeds like clover in the lawn, which bees work heavily.
-
Fish and waterways: Dangerous to fish. Cover fish tanks and ponds before using, and don't allow the product, spray or empty container to enter drains, sewers, streams or ponds.
-
Poultry and livestock: Do not graze treated lawns, and do not feed lawn clippings from any treated area to poultry or livestock. Worth noting if you have chooks that free-range on the lawn or get the clippings.
-
Children and pets: May re-enter the treated area once the spray has dried.
Store in the closed original container in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight and out of reach of children. Wash hands, arms and face thoroughly after use. If poisoning occurs, contact a doctor or the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26. Always read the label before use.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Baythroid?
Baythroid is a Yates insecticide brand containing beta-cyfluthrin, a synthetic pyrethroid. It works on contact, disrupting the insect's nervous system for fast knockdown. It comes in separate formulations for lawns and for gardens, this one is the lawns product.
What is the active ingredient?
25 g/L beta-cyfluthrin.
What pests does it control in lawns?
Lawn grubs (armyworm, cutworm, webworm), adult billbug, adult Argentine stem weevil, adult scarabs including African black beetle, mole crickets, couch mite, ants and grasshoppers.
How do I mix it for lawn grubs?
In a garden sprayer, mix 20 mL in 5 litres of water and spray evenly over 50 m². In a watering can, mix 8 mL in 9 litres and water evenly over 20 m². Only mix what you'll use on the day.
When is the best time to apply?
Late afternoon, onto a recently mown lawn that's been lightly watered. Lawn grubs feed at night, so an evening application catches them when they're active.
Will it kill bees?
Yes. The label states it will kill bees, so don't spray while bees are feeding on flowering plants. Check for flowering clover in the lawn, which bees work heavily, and treat when they aren't active.
Can my chickens go on the lawn afterwards, or eat the clippings?
No. Do not graze treated lawns or feed clippings from treated areas to poultry or livestock.
When can kids and pets go back on the lawn?
Once the spray has dried.
Why didn't it work on my lawn grubs?
Usually because it was applied to a dry lawn, applied in the morning rather than late afternoon, or not watered in on a dense lawn so it never reached the grubs in the thatch. Mow, water lightly, apply late in the day, and water in again on thick lawns.
