Bifenthrin Granular Insecticide for Lawn Grubs & Beetles

Richgro Lawn Beetle & Grub Killa is a fast-acting granular insecticide for controlling lawn beetles and grubs in the home lawn. The active constituent is bifenthrin at 2g/kg, and the 750g pack treats up to 120m². The granules are spread over the lawn and watered in, and the insecticide works as a contact stomach poison on the pests as they move through the treated soil.

What It Controls

It controls a range of common lawn pests, including lawn armyworm, sod webworm, Argentine stem weevil adults, African black beetle adults and billbug adults. These are the grubs and beetles behind a lot of brown patching and thinning in home lawns.

How It Works

Bifenthrin is a contact stomach poison, and it's a residual insecticide, so once it's watered into the soil it can keep working over an extended period, which depending on conditions can be weeks to months. It won't harm the soil or grass when used as directed. Reapply if you still see activity, since heavier or ongoing infestations often need a follow-up treatment.

How to Use

First check that you actually have grubs or beetles. A good test is to mix soapy water in a bucket and pour it over the edge of a brown patch, and any grubs or beetles will surface within about ten minutes. To treat, broadcast the granules evenly over the affected lawn for uniform coverage, then water in straight away (Richgro suggests watering in with up to around 4mm of water) to activate the product and move it into the soil. Use the lower label rate for light pressure and the higher rate for heavier infestations. For a badly affected lawn, reapply around 4 to 6 weeks after the first treatment to catch newly hatched larvae. Apply at the first sign of activity, and always follow the label rates for each pest.

Safety & Handling

This is an insecticide, so keep it away from children and pets and store it in the closed original pack out of reach. Do not use it indoors, and do not apply it to edible plants. Keep pets and children off the treated area until the granules have been watered in and the lawn is dry. Wear gloves when handling the granules and wash your hands afterwards. Bifenthrin is toxic to fish and aquatic life, so do not apply within 2 metres of a fish pond, and keep the granules out of drains, streams and waterways. It's best not to apply within 24 hours of forecast rain, and if more than 25mm of rain falls within 24 hours of applying, a repeat application is advised.
