Richgro Caterpillar, Grasshopper & Millipede Killer 250mL: Carbaryl Concentrate for Ornamentals and Lawns

Richgro Caterpillar, Grasshopper & Millipede Killer is a liquid insecticide concentrate for controlling chewing and crawling pests on ornamentals, lawns and non-crop plants. You dilute it with water and spray, so the 250mL bottle makes up a good amount of spray. The active is carbaryl at 100 g/L, and it works fast on contact against a broad spread of common garden pests. Importantly, this is a product for ornamentals and turf, not for food crops, which is covered below.

What It Controls

The pests it's registered for depend on where you're using it. On ornamentals, it controls caterpillars, cutworm, harlequin bugs, leafrollers, leafhoppers, lacebugs, pumpkin beetle (not in TAS), Rutherglen bugs and wingless grasshoppers (not in NSW). On non-crop plants, it controls European earwigs and Portuguese millipedes. On turf, it controls blackheaded cockchafer. Between them, that covers most of the caterpillars, grasshoppers and millipedes a home gardener runs into.

Important: Not for Food-Producing Plants

This is the key thing to get right. Richgro Caterpillar, Grasshopper & Millipede Killer must not be applied to food-producing plants. It's registered for ornamentals, turf and non-crop plants only, so keep it off your vegetables, herbs and fruit trees. If you need to treat pests on edible plants, this is not the product for that job.

How It Works

The active constituent is carbaryl, a carbamate insecticide, at 100 g/L. Carbaryl is an anticholinesterase compound: it disrupts the pest's nervous system, so insects that contact or feed on the treated foliage are killed. Because it works largely on contact, thorough spray coverage of the pests and the foliage is what gets results.

How to Mix and Apply

Shake the bottle well before use, then mix at the rate for your situation. For caterpillars, grasshoppers and most listed pests on ornamentals, and for earwigs and millipedes on non-crop plants, add 20mL of concentrate to 2 litres of water. For blackheaded cockchafer in turf, add 50mL to 2 litres of water and apply 8 litres of spray over 50 square metres. Spray the foliage thoroughly with minimum run-off, and treat insects when they're first seen, repeating as required. Apply in the early morning or late afternoon when insects are active, and avoid spraying in windy conditions or extreme heat. Only mix what you need and use all the mixed spray, then wash the sprayer out thoroughly afterwards.

A few label restrictions to note: don't apply if rain is expected within 24 hours, don't mix it with lime sulfur or Bordeaux mixture, and be aware that some uses are restricted by state (wingless grasshopper control is not for NSW, and pumpkin beetle control is not for TAS), since control-of-use laws vary.

Safe Use

Carbaryl is a poison and should be handled with care, not treated as harmless. Wear gloves and eye protection when mixing and spraying, avoid breathing the spray mist, and wash your hands afterwards. Keep children and pets away from the area during application and until the spray has dried, and don't let pets into areas where they could consume the product. Carbaryl is harmful to bees, so avoid spraying plants in flower while bees are foraging, and it's toxic to fish and aquatic life, so keep it away from drains, ponds and waterways. Always read and follow the full label before use.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the active ingredient?
Carbaryl at 100 g/L. It's a carbamate insecticide and an anticholinesterase compound, not an organophosphate, that works on the pest's nervous system.

Can I use it on my vegetables or fruit trees?
No. It must not be applied to food-producing plants. It's for ornamentals, turf and non-crop plants only.

What is the mixing rate?
For most pests on ornamentals and non-crop plants, mix 20mL in 2 litres of water. For blackheaded cockchafer in turf, mix 50mL in 2 litres and apply 8 litres over 50 square metres.

Can I use it on my lawn?
Yes. It's registered for turf to control blackheaded cockchafer, at 50mL in 2 litres of water.

How do I apply it?
Shake, mix at the right rate, and spray the foliage thoroughly with minimum run-off when pests are first seen. Spray in the early morning or late afternoon, and not if rain is expected within 24 hours.

Is it safe around pets and children?
It's a poison, so it needs care rather than being treated as safe. Keep children and pets away from treated areas until the spray has dried, wear gloves and eye protection, and keep it away from bees, fish and waterways.
