Multicrop Pyrethrum Insect Spray 1L: Ready-to-Use Natural Garden Insecticide
Multicrop Pyrethrum Insect Spray is a ready-to-use knockdown insecticide that kills and repels garden pests on contact. There's no mixing or measuring, you just spray it straight onto the insects and the plants they're feeding on. The active pyrethrins come from chrysanthemum flowers, and because they break down quickly, you can pick and eat fruit and vegetables just 24 hours after spraying. It's a Multicrop product, part of the Amgrow garden range.
What It Controls
It targets a broad range of common garden insects, including thrips, ants, earwigs, aphids, cabbage moth and leafhoppers. As you spray, it also flushes insects out of the hiding spots they shelter in, so pests that were tucked under leaves or in crevices are driven into contact with the spray.
How It Works
The active constituents are pyrethrins at 0.3 g/L, a natural extract from chrysanthemum flowers, plus piperonyl butoxide at 1.2 g/L. Pyrethrins are a contact insecticide that hit the insect's nervous system and cause a fast knockdown. The piperonyl butoxide is a synergist: it blocks the insect's ability to break the pyrethrins down, so a smaller dose does the job more reliably. Because it works on contact, the spray needs to actually land on the insect, which is why it pays to spray thoroughly and directly onto the pests rather than just misting the general area.
How to Use It
Shake the bottle, then spray directly onto the insects and the affected parts of the plant, getting under the leaves where many pests hide. The best times to spray are early morning or late afternoon and evening, which also happens to be when bees are least active. If pests persist, you can spray again every 7 to 14 days. Since it's a contact spray with a short residual life, a repeat application is often what clears a stubborn infestation, because it catches the next wave as eggs hatch out.
Harvesting After Spraying
One of the main reasons gardeners reach for pyrethrum is the short withholding period. The spray breaks down very quickly, often active for only around 24 hours, so you can harvest fruit and vegetables 24 hours after spraying. That makes it a practical choice for a productive veggie patch where you don't want a long wait between treating and picking.
Protecting Bees and Beneficial Insects
Pyrethrum is a natural product, but it isn't a selective one. It will kill beneficial insects, including bees, ladybirds and lacewings, if the spray lands on them directly. Bees in particular are very sensitive to it. The good news is that because it breaks down fast in sunlight and air, you can spray in a way that protects them: apply early in the morning or in the late evening when bees aren't foraging, and never spray plants that are in flower and being worked by bees. Pyrethrum is also toxic to fish and aquatic life, so keep it away from ponds, water features and drains, and avoid spray drift near waterways.
Is It Safe for Plants and Pets?
It's suitable for most edible plants, including herbs and leafy greens, though it's worth avoiding very young or delicate seedlings. As with any insecticide, keep children and pets away during application and until the spray has dried. Cats are more sensitive to pyrethrins than most animals, so take particular care to keep them off treated foliage until it's dry. Avoid breathing in the spray mist, use it in a well-ventilated spot, and wash your hands afterwards.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does Multicrop Pyrethrum Spray kill?
Common garden pests including thrips, ants, earwigs, aphids, cabbage moth and leafhoppers. It kills on contact and flushes insects out of the places they hide.
What is the active ingredient?
Pyrethrins at 0.3 g/L, a natural extract from chrysanthemum flowers, together with piperonyl butoxide at 1.2 g/L, which boosts how effectively the pyrethrins work.
How do I use it?
Shake, then spray directly onto the insects and the affected parts of the plant, including under the leaves. Spray in the early morning or evening, and reapply every 7 to 14 days if pests keep coming back.
How soon can I harvest after spraying?
You can harvest fruit and vegetables 24 hours after spraying. The spray breaks down quickly, so it's often only active for around a day.
Is it safe for bees?
Pyrethrum is toxic to bees, so it needs to be used with care. Spray only when bees aren't active, in the early morning or late evening, and never on plants that are in flower and being visited by bees. Because it breaks down fast, spraying at these times greatly reduces the risk.
What are the side effects or downsides?
The main thing to know is that it's non-selective, so it kills beneficial insects as well as pests if it contacts them, and it's toxic to bees, fish and aquatic life. It also has a short residual life, which is great for harvest times but means you may need to reapply for ongoing pests. Used at the right time of day and away from water, these downsides are easy to manage.
Is it safe on vegetables and herbs?
Yes, it suits most edible plants including herbs and leafy greens. Avoid spraying very young or delicate seedlings.
Where can I buy Multicrop Pyrethrum Insect Spray in Australia?
You can buy the ready-to-use 1L bottle from BPG Supplies, shipped Australia-wide.
