Yates Mavrik Gun 750mL: Ready-to-Use Insect & Mite Spray
Yates Mavrik Gun is a ready-to-use trigger spray for controlling a broad range of chewing and sucking insects and mites in the home garden. It contains 0.1 g/L tau-fluvalinate, a water-based synthetic pyrethroid, pre-mixed at the right strength so there's no measuring or diluting. Just shake and spray.
What It Controls
Mavrik controls various leaf-eating caterpillars, including tomato grub and cabbage white butterfly, on a range of vegetables and ornamentals. It also controls aphids, thrips, mites (including two-spotted mite) and whitefly on roses and ornamentals, plus caterpillars and aphids on vegetables.
How It Works
Tau-fluvalinate is a synthetic pyrethroid, essentially a man-made version of the pyrethrins found naturally in chrysanthemum flowers. It works through both contact and stomach action, disrupting the insect's nervous system so it becomes paralysed and dies. Because contact action matters, thorough coverage is important: spray right through the plant including the undersides of the leaves, where aphids, mites and whitefly congregate.
A Notable Point on Bees
Mavrik is classed as low hazard to bees, which is unusual for a pyrethroid and is one of the reasons gardeners choose it over other insecticides. Tau-fluvalinate is in fact well tolerated by honey bees compared with most insecticides in its class.
That said, low hazard isn't the same as no hazard. Best practice is still to spray when bees aren't actively foraging, so early morning or late in the day rather than the middle of a warm afternoon when the garden is busy with them. It's also worth knowing that tau-fluvalinate can affect some beneficial arthropods, particularly predatory mites, so keep that in mind if you're relying on them for natural pest control.
How to Use
Shake well before using. Spray thoroughly onto the affected plants, making sure to cover the undersides of the foliage as well as the tops. Monitor your plants and repeat as needed if pests return, following the label directions for your plant.
Important: When Not to Spray
The Yates label sets out several conditions worth following closely:
-
Do not spray when shade temperatures are near 30°C or higher. Spraying in heat risks damaging plants and reduces results, so aim for a cooler part of the day.
-
Do not spray when the soil is dry and plants are suffering from moisture stress. Water the plant well first and let it recover before treating.
-
Do not apply if rain is expected within 24 hours, or it will simply wash off.
Withholding Periods
Mavrik can be used on edible plants when you follow the label:
-
Cole crops (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, kale and Asian brassicas) and tomatoes: do not pick for 2 days after spraying.
-
Apples, cherries, table grapes, nectarines, peaches and plums: no withholding period is required when used as directed.
Safety
May irritate the eyes. Don't allow the spray or empty containers to get into drains, sewers, streams or ponds. Store in the closed original container in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight and out of reach of children. Always read the label before use.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the active ingredient in Yates Mavrik Gun?
It contains 0.1 g/L tau-fluvalinate, a water-based synthetic pyrethroid, supplied ready to use at that strength.
What pests does it control?
Leaf-eating caterpillars (including tomato grub and cabbage white butterfly), aphids, thrips, mites including two-spotted mite, and whitefly, across vegetables, roses and ornamentals.
Do I need to mix it?
No. The 750mL Mavrik Gun is a ready-to-use trigger spray, already at the correct strength. Just shake well and spray. If you'd prefer to mix your own, Mavrik is also available as a concentrate.
How do I use it properly?
Shake well, then spray thoroughly, covering the undersides of the leaves as well as the tops. Pests hide underneath foliage, and since the product works largely by contact, anything the spray misses won't be controlled.
Is it safe for bees?
It's classed as low hazard to bees, which is unusual for a pyrethroid. Even so, it's still good practice to spray when bees aren't actively foraging, such as early morning or late in the day.
Can I use it on vegetables and fruit?
Yes. Don't pick cole crops or tomatoes for 2 days after spraying. For apples, cherries, table grapes, nectarines, peaches and plums, no withholding period is required when used as directed.
When shouldn't I spray?
Don't spray when shade temperatures are near 30°C or above, when plants are stressed from dry soil, or if rain is expected within 24 hours.
Why isn't it working on my plants?
The most common reasons are incomplete coverage (particularly missing the undersides of leaves), spraying in heat, or rain washing it off soon after application. Spray thoroughly on a mild day and check the plant a few days later.
