Legion Spring Assortment Kit 22 Pieces – Extension and Compression Springs in 11 Sizes

Legion Spring Assortment Kit, 22 Springs in 11 Sizes

The Legion Spring Assortment Kit contains 22 steel springs in 11 different sizes, two of each, covering both extension springs and compression springs. It is a handy repair kit for replacing broken or lost springs in latches, catches, screen doors, gate fittings, tools, toys, gadgets and small mechanisms around the home, shed and garden.

Extension and Compression Springs Explained

The kit includes the two most common spring types. Extension springs are tightly coiled with a hook or loop at each end, and they pull back when stretched. They are used where something needs to spring closed or return, such as screen door closers, gate latches, trap doors and tension mechanisms. Compression springs have open, spaced coils and push back when squeezed. They are used inside latches, buttons, plungers, spray nozzles, pens and push mechanisms that need to pop back out.

A Spare Spring When You Need One

Springs are small parts that often fail first, stopping a tool or fitting from working even though everything else is fine. With 11 sizes on hand, there is a good chance of finding a close match without a trip to the hardware store. Having two of each size also means you can replace pairs, or keep a spare for next time.

Matching a Replacement Spring

When choosing from the kit, compare the old spring's outside diameter, length, wire thickness and type. A spring with thicker wire or fewer coils will be stiffer, while thinner wire and more coils will be softer. Extension springs can be trimmed and the end bent into a new loop with pliers, and compression springs can be shortened by snipping off a coil, so a slightly longer spring can often be adapted to fit.

Fitting Springs Safely

Springs store energy, so take care when fitting them. Wear safety glasses, as a spring that slips while stretched or compressed can fly off with force. Use long-nose pliers to hook extension springs into place rather than stretching them by hand, and do not stretch an extension spring further than needed, as it can lose its tension permanently. When cutting a spring to length, use proper side cutters and cover it with a cloth so the cut piece does not fly. Keep springs dry and lightly oiled to slow down rust if they are used outdoors.
