Description

Multicrop Pyrethrum Long Life Insect Spray 1L: Triple-Strength, Longer-Lasting Pest Control

Multicrop Pyrethrum Long Life is a ready-to-use, fast-acting contact insecticide that kills a wide range of garden pests and keeps protecting for far longer than standard pyrethrum. It's based on natural pyrethrum extracted from chrysanthemum flowers, at triple the strength of the standard Multicrop pyrethrum, and it's stabilised so it stays active on the plant for up to 20 days. Despite that longer protection, it still breaks down enough for you to harvest fruit and vegetables just 24 hours after spraying. It comes in a 1L trigger pack and is Australian owned and made.

What It Controls

It controls a broad list of common garden and indoor plant pests, including aphids, rose aphids and cabbage aphids, thrips, whitefly, ants, earwigs, cabbage moth, leafhoppers and flies. It can be used across garden fruit trees, vegetables, and both outdoor and indoor plants, so it covers most of what a home gardener runs into across the year.

What "Triple Strength" and "Long Life" Actually Mean

These are the two things that set this apart from a standard pyrethrum, and both are real rather than just label talk. The active pyrethrins sit at 0.9 g/L, three times the 0.3 g/L in the standard Multicrop pyrethrum, alongside piperonyl butoxide at 3 g/L, which stops insects breaking the pyrethrins down and makes the dose work harder. The "long life" part comes from the pyrethrum being stabilised against UV, which is what normally causes pyrethrum to break down within a day. Stabilised, it stays active for up to 20 days outdoors, and up to around 40 days indoors where there's no sun and rain to wear it down. In practice that means fewer sprays to hold a stubborn infestation.

How It Works

Pyrethrins are a contact insecticide. They hit the insect's nervous system for a fast knockdown, and the piperonyl butoxide synergist makes that knockdown more reliable. Because it works on contact, the spray needs to reach the insects themselves, so thorough coverage matters more than volume.

How to Use It

Shake the bottle well, then spray directly onto the pests and the affected parts of the plant. Cover both the upper and, importantly, the under-side of the leaves, spraying to the point of run-off, since that's where many pests shelter. Spray when pests are active, and choose early morning or late afternoon and evening, which is also when bees are least likely to be around. Avoid spraying very young seedlings and sensitive ferns, which can be marked by it. If pest pressure continues, reapply every 7 to 14 days.

Harvesting After Spraying

Even though it stays active on the plant for up to 20 days, the withholding period for eating is short. The label direction is not to pick fruit or vegetables until one day after spraying, so you can harvest 24 hours after treating. You get long-lasting protection against insects on the plant, without a long wait before you can pick and eat your produce.

Protecting Bees and Beneficial Insects

Pyrethrum is natural, but it isn't selective. It will kill beneficial insects, including bees, ladybirds and lacewings, if the spray lands on them, and bees are especially sensitive. Spray only when bees aren't active, in the early morning or late evening, and never on plants that are in flower and being worked by bees. Pyrethrum is also toxic to fish and aquatic life, so keep it well away from ponds, water features and drains, and avoid spray drift near water.

Is It Safe for Plants and Pets?

It suits garden fruit trees, vegetables and ornamental plants, and leaves no harmful residue behind, which is why the harvest window is so short. Avoid young seedlings and sensitive ferns. As with any insecticide, keep children and pets away during application and until the spray has dried, and take extra care with cats, which are more sensitive to pyrethrins than most animals. Use it in a well-ventilated area, avoid breathing the mist, and wash your hands afterwards.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Multicrop Pyrethrum Long Life control?
A wide range of garden and indoor plant pests, including aphids, thrips, whitefly, ants, earwigs, cabbage moth and leafhoppers. It kills on contact.

What does "triple strength" mean?
The pyrethrins are at 0.9 g/L, three times the 0.3 g/L in standard Multicrop pyrethrum, with piperonyl butoxide at 3 g/L to boost their effect. It's a genuinely stronger formula, not just a stronger name.

How long does it last?
Because the pyrethrum is stabilised against UV, it stays active for up to 20 days outdoors, and up to around 40 days indoors, rather than breaking down within a day like standard pyrethrum.

How do I use it?
Shake well and spray directly onto the pests, covering both sides of the leaves to the point of run-off. Spray when pests are active, in the early morning or evening, and reapply every 7 to 14 days if needed. Avoid young seedlings and sensitive ferns.

When can I harvest after spraying?
You can pick fruit and vegetables 24 hours after spraying, one day, even though it keeps protecting the plant for much longer.

Is it safe for bees?
Pyrethrum is toxic to bees, so spray only when they aren't active, early morning or late evening, and never on flowering plants they're visiting. Keep it away from waterways too, as it's toxic to fish.

What's the difference between this and standard Multicrop Pyrethrum?
Both use natural pyrethrum for a fast contact knockdown. This Long Life version is triple strength and stabilised, so it lasts up to 20 days rather than around a day. Choose Long Life for tougher or recurring infestations, and the standard spray for a quick knockdown where lasting residual isn't needed.

Where can I buy Multicrop Pyrethrum Long Life in Australia?
You can buy the ready-to-use 1L bottle from BPG Supplies, shipped Australia-wide.
