Multicrop Take Root: Plant Rooting Hormone Powder in a 15g Sachet
Multicrop Take Root is a rooting hormone powder, a plant propagation product that stimulates and speeds up root development on plant cuttings. It contains two plant rooting hormones, indole butyric acid (IBA) and naphthalene acetic acid (NAA), each at 0.5g/kg. One 15g sachet treats up to 500 cuttings, which is plenty for a home gardener propagating shrubs, natives, herbs, roses and indoor plants through the year.
IBA and NAA: Why Two Rooting Hormones Work Better
IBA and NAA are both auxins, but plants respond to them differently. IBA is the most widely used rooting compound and suits a broad range of plants. NAA is a stronger synthetic auxin that helps some plants that respond poorly to IBA alone. Combining the two means one cutting powder for plants covers more species, which is why Multicrop based its levels on trial work across hundreds of plant types. Single-hormone powders, such as IBA-only products, work well too, but a dual formula gives you more flexibility when you're propagating many different plants.
Best Time to Take Cuttings in Australia
- Spring (September to November): softwood cuttings from fresh new growth, such as salvias, fuchsias, geraniums and many herbs.
- Summer to autumn (December to April): semi-hardwood cuttings from firmer growth, such as grevilleas, westringias, lavender, rosemary, hibiscus and many natives.
- Winter (June to August): hardwood cuttings from dormant stems, such as roses, grapes, figs and mulberries.
Take cuttings early in the morning, when stems are full of water, and keep them in a damp bag until you're ready to dip and plant.
How to Use Rooting Powder on Cuttings
- Cut a healthy stem just below a leaf node and trim off the lower leaves.
- Pour a little plant cutting powder into a clean lid or saucer.
- Moisten the bottom of the cutting, dip it into the powder and tap off the excess.
- Push a hole in the mix with a pencil, insert the cutting and firm the mix around it.
- Water gently and keep the cuttings in a sheltered, bright spot out of direct sun.
- Discard leftover powder from the saucer rather than tipping it back into the sachet.
Common Mistakes When Rooting Cuttings
- Too much powder: a thick coating doesn't root faster. A light, even dusting is enough.
- Wet, heavy mix: soggy potting mix rots the stem before roots form. Use a free-draining propagating mix.
- Dipping into the sachet: sap and moisture contaminate the rest of the powder. Always tip out what you need.
- Letting cuttings dry out: low humidity wilts cuttings. A clear cover or plastic bag over the pot helps.
- Pulling to check roots: gently tug after a few weeks instead. Resistance means roots have formed.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is rooting hormone?
Rooting hormone is a propagation product containing auxins, the plant hormones that trigger root growth. Applied to the base of a cutting, it stimulates and speeds up root development, so more cuttings take.
Is Multicrop Take Root different from an IBA-only rooting powder?
Yes. Take Root combines IBA with NAA, so it works across a wider range of plants than a single-hormone powder. IBA-only powders still work well on many easy to moderate rooting plants.
Does rooting hormone work?
Yes. Rooting hormone shortens the time cuttings take to form roots and lifts strike rates, especially on semi-hardwood and woody plants. Fast rooters like coleus or mint often root without it.
How much rooting powder do I use per cutting?
Only a light coating. Dip the moist base of the cutting and tap off the excess. That's why one 15g sachet stretches to around 500 cuttings.
What is the best rooting hormone powder?
The right rooting hormone powder suits the plants you grow. A dual-hormone powder covers a wide range of plants in one product, while a single-hormone powder suits simpler jobs. Check the active constituents and coverage on the pack.
Is rooting powder better than gel or honey?
Powder is easy to apply, stores well and gives a measured coating. Gels hold to the stem more heavily and suit some woody cuttings. Honey and willow water are home methods without the measured hormone levels found in a registered product.
Can I use Take Root on succulents?
Most succulents root easily without hormone. Let the cut end dry and callus for a few days first. If you want to use powder, apply a very light coat after callusing.
