Multicrop Take Root: Rooting Hormone Powder for Plant Cuttings (2 Pack)
Multicrop Take Root is a rooting hormone powder that helps plant cuttings form roots faster and improves the number of cuttings that take. It combines two plant rooting hormones, indole butyric acid (IBA) and naphthalene acetic acid (NAA), each at 0.5g/kg. This set includes two 15g sachets, and each sachet treats up to 500 cuttings, so the pack covers up to 1000 cuttings in total. The fine powder sticks to the moist base of a cutting, making it clean and simple to use for propagating shrubs, flowering plants, herbs, natives and indoor plants.
What Is Rooting Hormone?
Rooting hormones are auxins, the natural plant hormones that tell a stem to form roots. A fresh cutting has no roots and limited stored auxin, so applying extra auxin to the cut end encourages root cells to form sooner. IBA is the most widely used rooting compound, and NAA works across a different range of plants. Using both together lets Take Root perform on more plant types than a single-hormone powder, with active levels based on Multicrop's trial work across hundreds of plants.
Softwood, Semi-Hardwood and Hardwood Cuttings
- Softwood cuttings: taken from fresh, soft spring growth, such as fuchsia, salvia, coleus and many herbs. They root quickly, often in a few weeks.
- Semi-hardwood cuttings: taken in summer to autumn from growth that is starting to firm up, such as grevillea, westringia, lavender, rosemary, gardenia and many natives. This is where rooting powder makes the biggest difference.
- Hardwood cuttings: taken from mature, dormant wood in winter, such as roses, grapes and figs. They take longer to root, so be patient and keep the medium just moist.
How to Use Rooting Powder on Cuttings
- Take a healthy cutting about 10cm long, cutting just below a leaf node with clean, sharp secateurs.
- Remove the lower leaves, leaving two to four at the top.
- Tip a small amount of powder into a clean dish rather than dipping into the sachet, so the remaining powder stays clean.
- Moisten the base of the cutting, dip it into the powder and tap off the excess.
- Make a hole in the growing medium with a pencil or dibber first, so the powder isn't rubbed off as you insert the cutting.
- Insert the cutting, firm the mix gently around it and water in.
- Keep the cuttings in bright, indirect light and the mix moist but not wet. A clear cover or propagator helps hold humidity.
- Throw away any leftover powder in the dish after use.
Choosing a Growing Medium
Cuttings need a free-draining mix that holds some moisture but plenty of air, as soggy mix causes the base to rot before roots form. A propagating mix, or a blend of coarse sand or perlite with coir or peat, works well. Avoid using rich garden soil or fertilised potting mix for unrooted cuttings.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Multicrop Take Root Plant Cutting Powder used for?
It's a rooting hormone powder for plant cuttings. You dip the moist base of a cutting into the powder before planting to help it form roots faster and improve the chance that it takes.
How many cuttings does the Multicrop Take Root 2 pack treat?
Each 15g sachet treats up to 500 cuttings, so the set of two covers up to 1000 cuttings. Keeping the second sachet sealed means you have fresh powder for the next propagating season.
Does rooting powder actually work?
Yes. Rooting hormone powder speeds up root formation and increases strike rates, especially on semi-hardwood and woody cuttings that are slow or difficult to root. Very easy rooters, such as mint or pothos, often root without it, but powder still helps them root more evenly.
What is the best rooting hormone for cuttings?
Choose a rooting hormone that suits the cuttings you take. A powder with two hormones, such as IBA and NAA, covers a wider range of plants than a single-hormone product. Powders are easy to apply and store, while gels coat the stem more heavily and are often used on woody cuttings.
How long do cuttings take to root with rooting hormone?
Softwood cuttings often root in about two to four weeks, semi-hardwood cuttings in four to eight weeks, and hardwood cuttings can take a few months. Warmth, humidity and a free-draining mix all speed things up.
Can I use rooting powder on native plants?
Yes. Many Australian natives, including grevilleas, westringias and correas, are grown from semi-hardwood cuttings, and rooting powder helps improve their strike rate.
How should I store rooting powder?
Keep the sachet sealed in a cool, dry place, out of reach of children. Always pour out only what you need, as moisture and plant sap from dipping can spoil the rest of the powder.
