Kendon Lime Sulphur 5 Litre: Fungicide, Miticide & Insecticide

Kendon Lime Sulphur is a concentrated calcium polysulphide solution that works as a fungicide, miticide and insecticide in one. It's a long-trusted, organic-suitable spray for controlling certain diseases, mites and scale insects on pome fruit, stone fruit, citrus, grapes, roses, hedges, vegetables and ornamentals. It's best known as a "winter clean-up" spray, used while plants are dormant to knock back overwintering fungal spores and pest populations before the growing season.

It's a non-systemic product that protects through both direct contact and a fungitoxic vapour, which helps it reach parts of the plant the spray doesn't directly land on. Because it's a multi-site product, it also carries a low risk of resistance, making it a useful part of a season-long spray program.

What It Controls

Kendon Lime Sulphur controls a broad range of problems, including powdery mildew, rust, brown rot, black spot, shot hole, leaf curl and freckle, along with scale insects such as San Jose scale, white louse scale and frosted scale, and a wide range of mites including bud mite, erinose mite, pear leaf blister mite, two-spotted mite, tomato mite and vine bunch mite.

How to Use

Shake the container well, then mix with water and keep the spray agitated. Rates vary by crop and target, generally from 1 L per 100 L of water up to 10 L per 100 L. As a guide, citrus is around 10 L per 100 L and pome fruit around 5 L per 100 L, but always follow the rate on the product label for your crop and pest. Spray to full, even coverage, and use the mixture on the same day it's made, as it doesn't keep once diluted. Most applications are made while plants are dormant, though some in-season uses are supported on the label.

Important Compatibility & Safety

Lime sulphur needs a few key precautions:

  • Oils: Do not apply lime sulphur within about 2 to 3 weeks (before or after) of an oil spray, and don't tank-mix it with oils, unless the label specifically allows it. Combining the two can severely burn plants.

  • Acids: Never mix lime sulphur with acids, acidic water (below pH 4) or phosphate products. Contact with acid releases hydrogen sulphide, a toxic gas.

  • Sulphur-sensitive plants: Don't spray apricots, peaches, raspberries, cucurbits or other sulphur-sensitive plants during their growing period. Some pome fruit varieties are also sulphur-shy, so test a small area first if unsure.

  • Conditions: Don't spray in hot weather, and avoid contact with painted surfaces, as it can stain.

The concentrate is corrosive and can cause skin and eye irritation or burns, and the vapour can irritate the respiratory system. Wear gloves, eye protection and suitable clothing, avoid breathing the spray mist, use it in a well-ventilated outdoor area, and wash your hands after handling. It's harmful if swallowed and harmful to aquatic life, so keep it out of drains and waterways and away from children and pets. Read the full label and Safety Data Sheet before use.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the active ingredient in Kendon Lime Sulphur?
It's a calcium polysulphide (polysulphide sulphur) solution at 200 g/L. It acts as a non-systemic fungicide, miticide and insecticide through both contact and vapour action.

What does lime sulphur control?
Fungal diseases like powdery mildew, rust, brown rot, black spot, shot hole, leaf curl and freckle, plus scale insects and a wide range of mites, on fruit trees, citrus, grapes, roses and ornamentals.

What is the mixing rate for Kendon Lime Sulphur?
Rates range from about 1 L to 10 L per 100 L of water depending on the crop and target. As a guide, citrus is around 10 L per 100 L and pome fruit around 5 L per 100 L. Always follow the label rate for your crop, and use the mix the same day.

Can I use lime sulphur with an oil spray?
Not together, and not close in time. Keep about 2 to 3 weeks between a lime sulphur spray and an oil spray, and don't mix them in the same tank unless the label specifically allows it, as the combination can badly burn plants.

Which plants should I not spray with lime sulphur?
Avoid spraying apricots, peaches, raspberries, cucurbits and other sulphur-sensitive plants during their growing period. Some pome fruit varieties are also sulphur-shy, so test a small area first.

Is Kendon Lime Sulphur suitable for organic gardening?
Yes. Lime sulphur is suitable for use in organic production systems when applied according to the label, and it's a popular organic winter clean-up spray.

Is lime sulphur safe to handle?
It's corrosive and can irritate or burn skin and eyes, and the vapour can irritate airways. Wear gloves and eye protection, avoid breathing the mist, never mix it with acids (which releases toxic gas), and keep it out of waterways. Read the label and SDS before use.
