Methomyl 225 Insecticide 5L: Broad Spectrum Crop Insecticide
Methomyl 225 is a broad spectrum insecticide containing 225 g/L methomyl, an anti-cholinesterase compound. It's a Group 1A (carbamate) insecticide used across Australian agriculture for the control of insect pests in a wide range of crops. This is the product formerly sold as Lannate-L, and it's a long-established standard in commercial crop protection.
This is a restricted agricultural product intended for trained, licensed users. It isn't a home garden, household or general-purpose insecticide.
How It Works
Methomyl is a carbamate that works by inhibiting cholinesterase in the insect's nervous system. It acts through both contact and stomach action, giving rapid knockdown of feeding pests. It's non-systemic, so thorough coverage of the crop canopy is essential, anything the spray doesn't reach won't be controlled.
Registered Crops
Methomyl 225 is registered for the control of certain insect pests in cereals, fruit and stone fruit, citrus, legumes and pulses, cotton, oilseed crops, potatoes, vegetables and brassicas, pastures, peanuts, ginger, duboisia and other crops, as set out in the Directions for Use table on the label.
Resistance Management
This matters with methomyl. Some lepidopteran pests have developed resistance and will survive spraying. Monitor the crop after application, and if control is poor, switch to an insecticide from a different chemical group rather than reapplying. Rotate modes of action across the season and don't exceed the maximum number of applications allowed on the label.
How to Use
Methomyl 225 is mixed with clean water and applied as a coarse spray with low pressure ground equipment. Set up and operate the sprayer to achieve even coverage throughout the crop canopy, using sufficient water to cover the crop to the point of run-off without excessive run-off.
Rates are crop and pest specific and are set out in the Directions for Use table on the label, so always work from the current approved label for your crop and target pest. For concentrate spraying, follow the label's concentration factor instructions.
The product can be tank mixed with certain other insecticides as specified on the label. As formulations vary between manufacturers, test any mixture before preparing commercial quantities.
Withholding Periods
Withholding periods vary considerably by crop, so check the label for yours. As a guide:
-
1 day: apples, beans, brassicas, chickpeas, nectarines, peaches, peas, stone fruit, sweetcorn, capsicums, tomatoes
-
2 days: pears, citrus
-
3 days: fresh strawberries; also grazing lucerne, pastures and sweetcorn (do not graze or cut for stockfeed)
-
5 days: blueberries
-
7 days: field peas, lentils, lupins, mung beans, soybeans, canola, sunflowers, grapes and other pulses and oilseeds
-
14 days: barley, wheat, oats, sorghum, maize, hops, mint, peanuts, poppies, sesame
Safety and Environmental Directions
Methomyl is an anti-cholinesterase compound and must only be handled by trained, licensed users with the correct equipment.
Bees: Dangerous to bees. Do not spray plants in flower while bees are foraging, and ensure beehives are removed from the area to be treated and from adjacent paddocks.
Wildlife and waterways: Dangerous to birds, fish, stock and wildlife. Birds feeding on treated areas may be killed. Do not contaminate streams, rivers, dams or waterways with the chemical or used containers, and do not re-use containers.
Wear the full personal protective equipment specified on the label, keep away from heat, sparks and open flames, and store in the closed original container in a dry, cool, secure, well ventilated area. Always read the full approved label and Safety Data Sheet before use. If poisoning occurs, contact a doctor or the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the active ingredient in Methomyl 225?
It contains 225 g/L methomyl, an anti-cholinesterase compound. It's a Group 1A carbamate insecticide.
Is this the same as Lannate?
Yes. Methomyl 225 is the same 225 g/L methomyl formulation previously sold under the Lannate-L brand name.
What crops is it registered for?
Cereals, fruit and stone fruit, citrus, legumes and pulses, cotton, oilseeds, potatoes, vegetables and brassicas, pastures, peanuts, ginger, duboisia and others, as listed in the Directions for Use table on the label.
What are the application rates?
Rates are specific to each crop and pest and are set out on the approved label. Apply as a coarse spray with even coverage through the canopy to the point of run-off. Always use the current label rate for your situation.
Who can buy and use methomyl?
It's a restricted agricultural product for trained, licensed users. In most states appropriate accreditation is required to purchase and apply it. It isn't a home garden or household product.
What is the withholding period?
It varies by crop, from 1 day on crops like apples, brassicas and tomatoes, up to 14 days on cereals. Grazing crops require 3 days before grazing or cutting for stockfeed. Check the label for your specific crop.
Is it dangerous to bees?
Yes. Do not spray plants in flower while bees are foraging, and remove beehives from the treatment area and adjacent paddocks before applying.
What if it doesn't control my pest?
Some lepidopteran pests are resistant to methomyl. Monitor the crop after spraying, and if control is poor, switch to an insecticide from a different chemical group rather than respraying with the same product.
