Description

Yates Blitzem Snail & Slug Pellets 4kg: Bulk Garden Snail & Slug Bait

Blitzem is one of the most recognised snail and slug baits in Australian gardens, and for good reason. It works quickly and reliably on the pests that do the most damage overnight, snails and slugs chewing through seedlings, leafy greens, flowers and soft new growth.

The pellets contain metaldehyde, which kills snails and slugs by dehydration after they feed on the bait. This is the 4kg value pack, supplied in our own packaging, which works out considerably better value than small retail packs if you're baiting a decent-sized garden or reapplying through the season.

Mould Resistant

Snails and slugs are most active in damp, humid weather, and that's exactly when ordinary baits go mouldy and stop attracting pests. Blitzem pellets are formulated to resist mould, so they stay palatable and keep doing their job through the wet, muggy conditions when snail pressure is at its worst.

Contains a Bittering Agent

Yates include a bittering agent in the Blitzem formulation as a taste deterrent, which is a sensible feature to have in a garden bait and one worth knowing about when choosing between products.

Where to Use It

Around vegetables, seedlings, leafy greens, flowers, ornamentals and potted plants, and anywhere you're seeing chewed foliage or slime trails.

How to Apply

  1. Find the problem areas. Look for chewed leaves, ragged holes in foliage and silvery slime trails. Snails and slugs shelter during the day in damp, sheltered spots, under pots, along garden edges, in mulch and beneath low foliage.

  2. Scatter the pellets evenly, around 5 grams per square metre, over the soil around the plants you're protecting.

  3. Spread thinly, never in heaps. This is the single most useful tip with any bait. An even, thin spread means far more snails and slugs actually come across a pellet, so you get noticeably better control from the same amount of product. Heaps are wasteful and less effective.

  4. Apply in the early evening, since snails and slugs come out to feed at night.

  5. Reapply as needed, particularly after heavy rain or watering, and whenever fresh activity appears.

Don't over-apply, more product doesn't mean better results, and even coverage is what actually matters.

Safety

Keep out of reach of children and pets. Wear gloves when handling and avoid contact with skin. Store in a cool, dry place in the original packaging. If you're baiting around vegetables or other edible crops, observe the withholding period stated on the pack. Always read and follow the label directions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you use slug and snail pellets?
Scatter them thinly and evenly over the soil around the plants you're protecting, at roughly 5 grams per square metre, rather than leaving them in heaps. Apply in the early evening and focus on the damp, sheltered spots where snails and slugs hide during the day.

Do snail pellets kill slugs as well?
Yes. Snails and slugs are both molluscs with the same feeding behaviour, so the bait works on both.

How do slug pellets kill snails?
Blitzem contains metaldehyde, which kills snails and slugs by dehydration. After feeding on the bait they stop feeding and dry out, so damage to your plants stops rather than continuing.

When is the best time to apply?
Early evening, since snails and slugs feed at night. Baiting before or during warm, damp, humid weather is most effective, as that's when they're most active.

How often should I reapply?
Reapply after heavy rain or watering, and whenever you notice fresh slime trails or new damage. Follow the reapplication interval on the pack.

Why scatter thinly instead of in heaps?
Even coverage means more snails and slugs encounter a pellet, so you get better control from the same amount of bait. Piling pellets up wastes product without improving results.

Can I use it in the vegetable garden?
Yes, it's widely used around vegetables and seedlings. Check the pack for the withholding period before harvesting edible crops.

What size is this pack?
4kg, supplied in our own packaging. It's a practical size for larger gardens or anyone reapplying regularly through the season, and better value than small retail packs.
