What Bird Species Can Eat Vetafarm Maintenance Pellets?

Maintenance Diet is recommended for Australian and Asiatic parrots and suits most pet parrot species. That includes cockatiels, budgies, lovebirds, conures, galahs, rosellas, lorikeet-free parrot aviaries, cockatoos, eclectus and similar birds. For breeding birds, Vetafarm recommends switching to its Breeder Pellets about 6 weeks before the breeding season, and back to Maintenance Diet once chicks have fledged.

Feeding Guide

Feed Maintenance Diet as about 80% of your bird's daily intake, with around 15% fresh fruit and vegetables and about 5% treats like nuts and seeds for variety. Vetafarm recommends a minimum of 10% of your bird's body weight in pellets per day:

• 90g cockatiel: at least 9g per day
• 150g sun conure: at least 15g per day
• 300g galah: at least 30g per day

Always provide fresh, clean water. Store pellets in an airtight container, out of direct sunlight and below 30°C, and use within 30 days of opening.

How to Transition Parrots to Vetafarm Pellets

• Parrots larger than a cockatiel: remove seeds, treats and seed hulls from the cage and offer pellets only for two days. If they're not eating, mix seed and pellets 50:50 for two more days, then go back to pellets only. Repeat until they're eating pellets, then remove seed completely.
• Smaller parrots and neophemas (such as Bourke's, Elegant and Scarlet-chested parrots): mix 50:50 seed and pellets for seven days, then 75:25 pellets to seed, switching to pellets only once they're eating them.
• Use the same dishes and feeding spots as before. Birds in groups and parents feeding young usually convert more readily.
• Expect birds to drink more water, and droppings to change from black to brown or tan and become larger. This is normal on a pellet diet.
