Martins Sheep Manure: An All-Purpose Organic Fertiliser and Soil Conditioner
Martins Magic Boost Sheep Manure is an all-purpose organic fertiliser, soil conditioner and soil improver, screened and composted before packing so it's ready to use in the garden. It adds organic matter and a natural, gentle supply of nutrients to vegetable gardens, fruit trees, lawns, roses, shrubs and flower beds. This 30L bag suits topping up garden beds, preparing new planting areas and improving sandy or clay soils.
What Is Sheep Manure Good For?
Sheep manure is lower in nitrogen than chicken manure, so it's gentler and less likely to burn plants when used correctly. It still supplies phosphorus and potassium, which support root growth, flowering and fruiting. Its biggest benefit is the organic matter it adds, which:
- Improves soil structure and aeration in compacted soil
- Helps sandy soil hold more water and nutrients
- Improves water penetration and drainage in clay soil
- Encourages earthworms and beneficial soil microbes
- Builds humus over time for healthier, more productive soil
Compost for Vegetable Gardens
Composted sheep manure is one of the most popular ways to build up vegetable beds. Dig it through the soil a week or two before planting, so it settles into the bed and isn't sitting in a concentrated layer around young roots. Top up beds between crops to keep organic matter levels high. Always wash vegetables and herbs before eating, especially leafy greens and root crops.
How Do You Use Sheep Manure in the Garden?
- New garden beds: spread a layer a few centimetres deep and dig it into the top 15 to 20cm of soil.
- Established plants: spread around the root zone, lightly work it into the surface and water in.
- Trees and shrubs: apply out to the drip line, keeping it clear of the trunk.
- Roses and flowers: top-dress in spring and again after the first flush of flowers.
- Lawns: spread a light, even layer, brush it down to the soil and water well. Avoid thick piles that smother the grass.
Water well after every application to settle the manure into the soil.
What Plants Do Not Like Sheep Manure?
- Phosphorus-sensitive natives: grevilleas, banksias, hakeas and other Proteaceae can be damaged by the phosphorus in manure. Use a native-specific fertiliser instead.
- Seedlings and young transplants: don't plant directly into concentrated manure or pile it against tender roots. Mix it through the soil first.
- Stems and trunks: keep manure away from direct contact with stems and bark, which can hold moisture and cause rot.
Sheep Manure vs Other Manures
- Sheep manure: gentle, lower nitrogen, good for general soil building.
- Chicken (poultry) manure: higher in nitrogen, faster acting, but more likely to burn if overused.
- Cow manure: lower in nutrients, mainly used as a bulky soil conditioner.
For a balanced, all-round garden manure that's easy on plants, composted sheep manure is a reliable choice.
Safety
Like other bagged organic products such as compost and potting mix, manure can contain microorganisms. Wear gloves, avoid breathing in any dust, dampen the product before handling in dry conditions, and wash your hands after use. Keep pets and children away while spreading.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Martins Magic Boost Sheep Manure used for?
It's an all-purpose organic fertiliser, soil conditioner and soil improver for vegetable gardens, fruit trees, lawns, roses, shrubs and flower beds.
Is Martins Magic Boost Sheep Manure composted?
Yes. It's screened and composted before packing, so it's ready to use straight from the bag.
Is sheep manure good for gardens?
Yes. It adds organic matter and gentle nutrients, improves both sandy and clay soils, and encourages earthworms. It's less likely to burn plants than stronger manures like chicken manure.
What is the best garden manure?
It depends on your goal. Composted sheep manure is a well-balanced, gentle choice for general soil building. Chicken manure gives a stronger nitrogen boost, while cow manure is mainly a bulky soil conditioner.
What plants do not like sheep manure?
Phosphorus-sensitive natives such as grevilleas, banksias and hakeas can be harmed by manure. Also avoid planting seedlings directly into concentrated manure or piling it against stems.
Can I use sheep manure on my lawn?
Yes. Spread a light, even layer, brush it down to the soil surface and water thoroughly. Avoid thick layers that block light from the grass.
How much sheep manure do I need?
For new beds, a layer a few centimetres deep dug into the top 15 to 20cm of soil is a common guide. For established plants and lawns, a thin top-dressing is enough.
