AgroBest Envy 500mL: Anti-Transpirant Frost and Heat Protection for Plants

Envy is an anti-transpirant and frost protectant that shields plants through both extremes of the year, winter frost and summer heat. It's a concentrate you dilute and spray over the foliage, where it dries into an invisible protective film. Think of it as a combination of sunscreen and a windbreak for your plants: it can reduce moisture loss by up to 50%, increase frost tolerance by as much as 4°C, and help plants shrug off sunburn, windburn, salt spray and transplant shock. It won't impede growth or photosynthesis, and it's non-toxic, pH-neutral and biodegradable.

How Envy Works

Once sprayed on and dried, Envy forms an invisible, semi-permeable polymer membrane across the leaf, stem and fruit surfaces. The clever part is that the membrane still lets the plant breathe. It stays permeable to oxygen, carbon dioxide and ethylene, so photosynthesis and normal growth carry on as usual. What it does slow down is the loss of water and water vapour through transpiration, which is where the up to 50% moisture saving comes from. For frost, that same film acts as a physical barrier against the ice-nucleating bacteria and surface water that trigger frost damage, lifting a plant's frost tolerance by up to 4°C. It has been shown to protect down to around -4°C.

What It Protects Against

Envy is designed to shield plants from a spread of climate stresses: excessive moisture loss, light to medium frost, sunburn, salt spray and windburn, wilting in hot dry conditions, and the shock of transplanting. It can be used across most crops, trees, vegetables, turf, ornamentals and flower crops, so it suits everything from a veggie patch heading into a frosty night to potted colour facing a heatwave.

How to Mix and Apply

Envy is a concentrate, so it needs to be diluted with water and applied through a garden sprayer. As a general guide the mix rate is around 10mL of Envy per 1 litre of water, so a 500mL bottle makes up to roughly 50 litres of spray, though you should confirm the rate on the label for your particular use. Shake the bottle well first. Fill your sprayer with water, then add the measured Envy to the tank after the water, which helps avoid foaming, and mix. Spray a fine, even mist over the whole plant, covering both sides of the leaves and spraying to the point of run-off, since the protection only works where the film actually forms.

When to Apply and How Long It Lasts

Timing matters. Apply Envy a day or a few days ahead of the expected frost, heatwave or transplant, so it has time to dry and set before the stress hits. Allow it 2 to 3 hours to set before any watering. Depending on conditions, temperature, wind, sun exposure, how well you covered the plant and the dilution used, a single application protects for roughly 21 to 60 days. Reapply after heavy rain or once the plant has put on significant new growth, since that fresh growth won't be covered by the original spray.

Important Application Notes

A few things make the difference between it working and not. Don't apply when the air or water temperature is below 5°C, or when the plants are already wet, as that dilutes the film. Avoid spraying when temperatures are above 35°C, to prevent stressing the plant. Don't spray during flowering, so you don't interfere with pollination. And don't mix Envy with any other pesticide or fertiliser in the tank; apply it either after those products or 10 to 14 days beforehand. Rinse your spray equipment thoroughly before and after use, since dried Envy can block nozzles. Although it's non-toxic, keep it away from children and pets as you would any garden product.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Envy and what does it do?
It's an anti-transpirant and frost protectant. Sprayed on and dried, it forms an invisible film that cuts moisture loss by up to 50% and raises frost tolerance by up to 4°C, while also guarding against sunburn, windburn and transplant shock.

What is the active ingredient?
A carboxylated hydrophilic polymer. It's non-toxic, pH-neutral and biodegradable, and forms a semi-permeable film on the plant surface.

How do I mix it?
Envy is a concentrate. As a guide, mix around 10mL per 1 litre of water, so a 500mL bottle makes up to about 50 litres of spray. Add it to the tank after the water to avoid foaming, and check the label for your specific rate.

How do I apply it?
Spray a fine, even mist over the whole plant to the point of run-off, covering both sides of the leaves, using a garden sprayer. It doesn't come with a spray bottle or hose fitting.

When should I spray?
A day or a few days before an expected frost, heatwave or transplant. Avoid spraying below 5°C, above 35°C, on wet plants, or during flowering.

How long does one application last?
Roughly 21 to 60 days, depending on weather, sun, wind, coverage and dilution. Reapply after heavy rain or once the plant puts on new growth.

Does it stop the plant photosynthesising?
No. The film is semi-permeable, so it lets oxygen, carbon dioxide and ethylene through, and photosynthesis and growth continue normally.

Where can I buy AgroBest Envy in Australia?
You can buy the 500mL bottle from BPG Supplies, shipped Australia-wide.
