Description
Weed Control Fabric 1m x 50m 30gsm: Permeable Weed Mat for the Garden
This weed control fabric is a permeable weed mat that suppresses weeds while still letting water, air and nutrients through to the soil below. It measures 1m wide x 50m long, giving 50 square metres of cover, and it works by blocking sunlight so weed seeds can't germinate and establish. Unlike solid plastic, the woven fabric lets rain and irrigation soak straight through, so the plants you want to keep still get watered while the weeds underneath are starved of light.
It's a practical, chemical-free alternative to spraying, and once it's down and covered it does the work for you, cutting out a lot of ongoing hand weeding. The 30gsm weight makes it a light-to-medium fabric well suited to garden beds, borders and under mulch, where you want reliable weed suppression without the cost of the heaviest commercial-grade mat.
Key Features
- Permeable fabric that lets water, air and nutrients through
- Blocks sunlight to stop weeds germinating
- Chemical-free weed control, an alternative to spraying
- Cuts down ongoing hand weeding
- Easy to lay and secure with landscape pegs or staples
- 30gsm weight, suited to garden beds, borders and under mulch
Where to Use It
- Flower beds and garden borders
- Vegetable gardens and raised beds
- Around trees and shrubs
- Under mulch, bark, gravel or stone
- Along pathways and low-traffic landscaped areas
How to Lay It
Clear and level the area first, removing existing weeds, then roll the fabric out over the soil and cut it to fit around plants and edges. Overlap the edges where you're joining widths so weeds can't push up through the gaps, and secure it down with landscape pegs or staples so it stays flat and doesn't lift in wind. For planted beds, cut a cross or hole at each plant position and plant through it. Covering the fabric with mulch, bark or gravel protects it from sunlight and foot traffic, gives a tidier finish, and helps it last longer, since exposed fabric breaks down faster in the sun over time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does water get through the fabric?
Yes. It's permeable, so rain and irrigation pass straight through to the soil while the fabric blocks sunlight to suppress weeds.
What weight is it, and what's it best for?
It's a 30gsm fabric, a light-to-medium weight well suited to garden beds, borders and use under mulch. For heavy-traffic or long-term commercial jobs, a heavier grade is a better fit.
How do I stop weeds coming through the joins?
Overlap the edges where you join widths, and cover the fabric with mulch or gravel, so weeds can't find light through gaps.
Can I plant through it?
Yes. Cut a cross or hole at each plant position and plant through the fabric, then secure and mulch around it.
Where can I buy weed control fabric in Australia?
It's available from BPG Supplies (Bonnyrigg Produce & Garden Supplies), with local pickup in Bonnyrigg NSW and delivery across Australia.
