Chick Starter Feed for Chicks and Ducklings: Vella Starter Crumble
Vella Chick & Duckling Starter is a complete chick feed and duckling feed in fine crumble form, made for all breeds of layer chicks and for ducklings from day old to around 5 to 6 weeks of age. It supplies everything young birds need in their first weeks, so no other supplement is required, just the crumble and fresh water. The small crumble is easy for tiny beaks to pick up, which helps chicks and ducklings start eating well from day one. It's made in Australia by Vella Stock Feeds.
Why Ducklings Need a Starter With Extra Niacin
Ducklings grow quickly and need considerably more niacin (vitamin B3) than chicks for strong legs and bones. A starter made only for chickens can leave ducklings short, which can show up as leg weakness or bowed legs. Vella's Chick & Duckling Starter includes elevated niacin to cover ducklings' needs, so mixed hatches of chicks and ducklings can share one feed.
Regano Herbal Coccidiostat and Gut Health
Coccidiosis is one of the most common health problems in young poultry. This starter contains Regano, a natural herbal coccidiostat that helps protect young birds against it. Because it's herbal rather than chemical, there's no withholding period for meat or eggs, and it's suitable for ducklings.
The formula uses true vegetable protein sources with no urea and no restricted animal materials, and has no added hormones or antibiotics. Probiotics, prebiotics and digestive enzymes support a healthy gut, while natural betaine helps birds cope in hot weather.
What Is the Best Starter Feed for Chicks and Ducklings?
The best starter feed gives young birds everything they need in a form they can eat easily. Look for:
- Around 18 to 20% protein for fast early growth
- Low calcium, as layer feed has too much for young birds
- A coccidiostat to help protect against coccidiosis
- Extra niacin if you're raising ducklings
- A fine crumble that's easy for small beaks
- A complete formula, so nothing else needs adding
Vella Chick & Duckling Starter ticks each of these for both chicks and ducklings.
