Description

SureFire Treeson: A Systemic Woody Weed Herbicide

SureFire Treeson is a systemic, Group I (now Group 4) agricultural herbicide used to control unwanted timber, woody weeds and invasive brush. It contains two actives: 200g/L triclopyr (as the triethylamine salt) and 100g/L picloram (as the triisopropanolamine salt), which move through the plant to the roots to kill it and reduce regrowth. It's registered for unwanted timber by stem injection or cut stump and brushcutter application, and for blackberry, gorse and harrisia cactus by foliar spray. Made by PCT Holdings, this 500mL water-based concentrate suits landholders, farmers and land managers.

Triclopyr and Picloram: Why Two Actives?

  • Triclopyr: a fast-moving woody weed herbicide that's absorbed through leaves, stems and fresh cuts.
  • Picloram: a long-acting herbicide that moves to the roots and stays active, helping stop suckering and regrowth.

Combined, they give stronger control of hard-to-kill trees and woody weeds than either one alone. Treeson is a water-based (aqueous) concentrate mixed with water, not diesel.

What Weeds and Trees Does Treeson Control?

Unwanted timber (stem injection or cut stump): acacia (wattle), angophora, camphor laurel, casuarina (sheoak), corymbia, eucalyptus, lophostemon and melaleuca.

Foliar spray: blackberry, gorse and harrisia cactus.

Always check the label for species, states and situations.

How to Use Treeson

Stem injection (larger trees):

  • Mix 1 part Treeson with 4 parts water.
  • Make horizontal cuts through the bark into the sapwood around the trunk.
  • Apply the mix into each cut immediately, within about 3 seconds, before the sap flow seals the cut.

Cut stump or brushcutter (saplings and suckers):

  • Mix 500mL Treeson per 10L of water.
  • Cut stems close to the ground, no higher than about 10 to 15cm.
  • Apply to the fresh cut surface straight away.

High-volume foliar spray (blackberry, gorse, harrisia cactus):

  • Mix 500mL to 2.5L per 100L of water, depending on species and plant density.
  • Spray to thoroughly wet the foliage, crown and runner tips.
  • Add a surfactant for foliar spraying as directed on the label. A surfactant isn't needed for cut stump work.

Always follow the label rate for your target species and situation.

What Herbicide Kills Blackberry?

Blackberry is controlled with systemic herbicides that move to the roots, such as triclopyr and picloram combinations. Spray when blackberry is actively growing, from late spring to early autumn, and before it fruits. Don't cut, burn or clear sprayed canes for several months, as this stops the herbicide reaching the crown and roots. Spot-spray regrowth the following season.

How Do You Kill Woody Weeds?

Choose the method by plant size. Stem injection suits mature trees, cut stump suits saplings and multi-stemmed shrubs, and foliar spraying suits dense thickets like blackberry. Treat plants when they're actively growing and not stressed by drought, frost or waterlogging. Results are slow: symptoms can take weeks, and full kill can take months.

Soil Activity and Off-Target Risk

Picloram stays active in the soil and can move with water. Don't use Treeson where roots of trees or plants you want to keep may take it up, and keep it away from waterways, drainage lines and native vegetation. Trees of the same species growing close together can share root grafts, so herbicide injected into one may affect its neighbours. Avoid spray drift onto crops, gardens and sensitive plants.

Safety

Treeson is a Schedule 6 poison. Read the label before opening or using. Wear PVC gloves, a face shield or eye protection and protective clothing when mixing and applying. Store in the original container in a cool, well-ventilated place, out of reach of children and animals. If poisoning occurs, contact the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26.

What is the recommended mixing ratio for SureFire Treeson herbicide?

For stem injection, mix 1 part Treeson with 4 parts water. For cut stump or brushcutter use, mix 500mL per 10L of water. For foliar spray, mix 500mL to 2.5L per 100L of water. Always follow the label for your species.

What is the best herbicide for woody weeds?

What is the strongest herbicide for killing trees?

Picloram and triclopyr combinations like Treeson are among the most effective options for unwanted trees and woody weeds. The application method makes a big difference, with stem injection and cut stump giving the most targeted results.
