Description

Rat Bait Blocks: SureFire Brodifacoum Rodenticide for Rats and Mice

SureFire All Weather Blocks Rodenticide is a ready-to-use rat and mouse bait in wax block form, made for damp or dry situations in and around industrial, commercial, agricultural and domestic buildings. Each block contains brodifacoum at 0.05 g/kg, a second-generation anticoagulant that can deliver a lethal dose in a single feed and controls rodents resistant to warfarin. The blocks also contain denatonium benzoate, a bittering agent that makes them taste unpleasant to people.

How Brodifacoum Bait Blocks Work

Brodifacoum is an anticoagulant. It blocks the vitamin K cycle that rodents need for normal blood clotting, so after feeding they gradually lose the ability to clot. One feed is enough, but the effect takes several days to develop. That delay is useful: rats and mice don't link the bait with feeling unwell, so they keep visiting the station and the rest of the colony doesn't become bait shy.

Because brodifacoum is a single-feed active, it also controls rodents that have built up resistance to older, multi-feed anticoagulants such as warfarin.

Do Rat Poison Blocks Work?

Yes, when they're used properly. Rat poison blocks work best when rodents have few other things to eat and the bait is placed where they already travel, such as along walls, behind stored goods and near entry points. A few things make the biggest difference:

  • Remove or secure other food sources, including spilt grain and pet food
  • Put stations on active runways where you see droppings, gnawing or rub marks
  • Use enough stations for the level of activity, and keep them topped up
  • Check stations often so you can see how much bait is being taken

The wax formulation holds its shape and stays palatable in damp, humid areas where grain-based baits can go mouldy.

Rat Bait Blocks for Mice: Getting Placement Right

Mice behave differently from rats. They travel short distances and nibble small amounts from many spots, so a single station rarely does the job. For mice, use single blocks in stations placed closer together, about 2 to 3 metres apart, in the areas where you see activity. Under the current APVMA conditions, baiting for mice is indoors only.

What Makes an Effective Rat Bait?

The best poison for rats and mice is the one that suits your situation and can be used safely. Look for:

  • An active that works on your rodents, including any resistance to older baits
  • A format suited to the site, such as wax blocks for damp areas
  • A bittering agent to deter accidental human ingestion
  • Use inside tamper-resistant bait stations
  • A product you can use in line with its label and current regulations

Key Features And Benefits

  • Complete NPKS blend that feeds roots and resilience as well as leaf
  • Nitrogen for strong growth and green colour
  • High sulphur content for deep, longer-lasting colour
  • Sulphate of potash is gentler on turf and less likely to scorch than muriate of potash
  • Phosphorus supports root development in new turf
  • Potassium helps lawns handle heat, wear and dry spells
  • Calcium supports healthy cell walls and soil structure
  • Granules spread evenly by hand or spreader
  • Suits all grass types, from home lawns to sports fields

How To Use

  • Timing: apply when the grass is actively growing: early spring, a lighter feed in late spring or summer, and again in autumn.
  • Rate: spread 5–6kg per 100m² (about 50–60g/m²), three or four times a year.
  • Spread evenly: apply by hand or with a spreader. For an even result, spread half the amount in one direction and the rest at right angles.
  • Water in: water thoroughly straight after applying to wash granules off the leaf and into the soil.
  • Don’t spray or inject: No. 17 isn’t fully soluble, so don’t use it through irrigation, water injection or spray equipment.
  • Avoid: heatwaves, drought, and winter dormancy in warm-season grasses.
  • Clippings: lawns where clippings are caught and removed need feeding more often.
  • Clean up: sweep granules off paths and driveways, and clean spreaders after use, as the product can be corrosive to metals.

Safety

  • Avoid swallowing and avoid breathing in the dust.
  • Avoid contact with eyes and skin. Wear gloves when handling.
  • Wash hands after use.
  • Keep out of reach of children and animals. It isn't a stockfeed supplement.
  • This product can be corrosive to metals. Clean spreaders and equipment after use.
  • Lawn and turf use only. Don't use on vegetables or on soil periodically cropped to vegetables, as this blend has a comparatively high cadmium content.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the active ingredient in SureFire All Weather Blocks?

SureFire All Weather Blocks contain brodifacoum at 0.05 g/kg, a second-generation anticoagulant that can deliver a lethal dose in one feed and controls rodents resistant to warfarin. They also contain denatonium benzoate as a bittering agent.

Can SureFire All Weather Blocks be used outdoors?

Only in limited cases. Under the current APVMA instructions, domestic use is indoors only and outdoor baiting for mice isn't allowed. Commercial outdoor use against rats is permitted only in secured, tamper-resistant and weather-resistant bait stations within 2 metres of buildings.

Do rat poison blocks work?

Yes. Rat poison blocks work well when other food is removed, stations sit on active runways, and bait is checked and replaced until feeding stops.

Are bait blocks effective for mice?

Yes, when stations are placed close together. Mice feed in small amounts at many points, so use single blocks in stations about 2 to 3 metres apart indoors.

What is the best poison for rats and mice?

The best choice suits your rodent problem, any resistance to older baits and the site, and can be used legally and safely. For warfarin-resistant rats and mice, a single-feed active like brodifacoum is effective, but it must be used in tamper-resistant stations under current APVMA conditions.

How long does rat bait take to work?

Anticoagulant baits take several days to work after a feed. Keep stations stocked until feeding stops, then remove the remaining bait.

Are rat bait blocks safe around pets?

No. Brodifacoum is toxic to pets and wildlife, including through eating poisoned rodents. Use secured bait stations out of reach, collect dead rodents promptly, and contact a vet immediately if a pet may have eaten bait.
