Sulphate of Ammonia: Fast-Acting Nitrogen and Sulphur Fertiliser

Sulphate of ammonia, also called ammonium sulphate, is a high-nitrogen fertiliser that gives lawns, vegetables and garden plants a fast boost of leafy green growth. Redox Sulphate of Ammonia supplies 21% nitrogen in the ammonium form plus 24% sulphur, and it dissolves completely in water with no chloride. You'll also see it sold as sulfate of ammonia fertilizer or ammonium sulphate fertilizer, but it's the same nutrient. That nitrogen and sulphur combination drives strong, lush foliage and rich green colour, which is why it's a long-standing favourite for greening up tired lawns and pushing leafy crops.

Why the Sulphur Matters

Nitrogen is the headline, but the sulphur matters too. Sulphur helps plants build the proteins and chlorophyll they need for healthy growth and good colour, and both nutrients work together to correct the pale, yellowing leaves (chlorosis) that signal a nitrogen or sulphur shortage. Applied during active growth, ammonium sulphate acts quickly, so leaf colour and vigour improve soon after feeding.

A Fertiliser for Acid-Loving Plants

Sulphate of ammonia has a second useful property that sets it apart from other nitrogen fertilisers: it gradually lowers soil pH, making the soil more acidic. That makes it a practical fertiliser for acid-loving plants such as azaleas, camellias, gardenias, rhododendrons, blueberries and hydrangeas grown for blue flowers, and a good choice for alkaline soils. It works both ways, so it isn't the right pick where you need to keep soil neutral or alkaline.

Sulphate of Ammonia on the Lawn

Using sulphate of ammonia on lawns is one of the quickest ways to bring colour back to a pale, tired lawn in the growing season. Its fast-acting nitrogen pushes new leaf growth, while the sulphur deepens the green. Because it can scorch if left sitting on the grass, spread it evenly and water in straight after applying.

Ammonium Sulphate as a Herbicide Adjuvant

Ammonium sulphate is also widely used in spray tanks as a herbicide adjuvant. Hard water contains calcium and magnesium that can tie up herbicides such as glyphosate and reduce how well they work. Adding ammonium sulphate to the water first helps overcome this, improving herbicide performance in hard or bore water.
