Roban Rodenticide Blocks 1kg: Difenacoum Rat Poison That's Safer Around Pets
Roban Rodenticide Blocks are a professional-grade rat poison for controlling rats and mice around the home, shed, farm and workplace. The active ingredient is difenacoum, a second-generation anticoagulant that deals with both rats and mice, and importantly, with the resistant rodents that shrug off older brodifacoum, bromadiolone and warfarin baits. This is the value-sized 1kg pack, suited to larger properties or ongoing baiting programs.
Roban's real selling point is that it manages to be tough on rodents while being significantly kinder to your cats and dogs than the harshest baits on the market.
The Pet Safety Difference
Most rat poisons carry a serious risk if a pet gets into them. Roban is different by design. A dog would need to eat around its own body weight in bait, and a cat about twice its body weight, to reach a fatal (LD50) dose. Yet the amount needed to kill a rat or mouse is tiny, so you lose nothing in effectiveness. The same lower toxicity reduces the risk of secondary poisoning, where a pet or bird is harmed after catching a poisoned rodent.
It's important to be straight about this, though: safer is not the same as safe. Roban is still a poison, and it should always be placed inside secured bait stations, kept well away from children and pets, and any dead rodents cleared away promptly. Used that way, it gives you effective control with far more peace of mind than the strongest single-feed baits.
Made to Tempt Rodents, Built to Last
A bait only works if rodents actually eat it. Roban is made from food-grade wheat flour blended with chopped wheat, oats and milk protein, bound together with edible waxes, a recipe rats and mice find genuinely appealing. The wax binding also makes the blocks resistant to humidity and moisture, so they hold up in damp corners, outdoors and in burrows, not just dry indoor spots. Each block has a hole through the centre for fixing onto a bait station rod, or nailing or wiring in place so it can't be dragged off. The bittering agent Bitrex is included to discourage children from touching it.
How to Use It
Roban is a multi-feed bait, meaning rodents feed on it over several days, with death usually following 4 to 10 days after they begin. Set blocks out in secured bait stations along walls, near burrows, and wherever you see droppings or gnawing, spaced roughly every 5 metres, or every 2 metres for a heavy infestation. Keep bait clear of food and water, check stations regularly, and top up until activity stops, then remove any leftover bait. Wear gloves whenever you handle bait or dead rodents, and wash your hands well afterwards.
Safety
Roban is poisonous if swallowed. Keep it away from children, pets, livestock and wildlife, use it only in secured bait stations, and never let animals eat poisoned rodents. Store it sealed in its original container, away from drains and waterways. The antidote is Vitamin K1, given under medical or veterinary supervision. If poisoning is suspected, contact a doctor, vet or the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Roban a pet-friendly rat poison?
It's much safer around pets than most rat poisons, a dog would need to eat about its own body weight in bait, and a cat twice its body weight, to reach a fatal dose. But it's still an anticoagulant poison, so it isn't truly "pet friendly". Always use it in secured bait stations and keep it away from animals.
What makes Roban work on baits that have failed before?
Its active ingredient, difenacoum, controls rodents that have become resistant to older poisons like brodifacoum, bromadiolone and warfarin, so it often succeeds where other baits haven't.
Does it kill both rats and mice?
Yes. Difenacoum is effective against both rats and mice.
How long does it take to work?
It's a multi-feed bait, so rodents feed over a few days and death typically follows 4 to 10 days after they start, sometimes needing more than one feed.
Can I use the 1kg pack outdoors?
Yes. The weatherproof wax blocks suit outdoor use, damp areas and burrow baiting, as well as indoors. The 1kg size is handy for larger properties and ongoing baiting.
What should I do if my dog or cat eats some?
Contact a vet or the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26 immediately. The antidote is Vitamin K1, given under medical or veterinary supervision.
How should I set the blocks out?
Place them in secured bait stations where rodents are active, about every 5 metres, or every 2 metres for heavy infestations, using the centre hole to fix them in place. Keep bait away from food and water and replenish until activity stops.
