Gardman Galvanised Wire 1mm x 50m – General Purpose Garden Wire for Tying, Training and Fixing

Gardman 1mm Galvanised Wire, 50m Coil

Gardman Galvanised Wire is a 1mm diameter, 50m general purpose wire for tying, training, supporting and fixing around the garden, home and workshop. The steel wire is galvanised with a zinc coating for long life outdoors, and the 1mm gauge is fine enough to bend and twist by hand while still holding its shape once tied. It comes on a compact coil that is easy to store and dispense.

Training Climbers and Fruit Trees

One of the most common uses for fine galvanised wire is setting up support wires for climbing plants. Run horizontal wires between vine eyes or screws on a wall or fence to train climbing roses, jasmine, star jasmine, passionfruit, grapes and espaliered fruit trees. The plants are then tied to the wires with soft ties as they grow, creating a neat framework that keeps growth flat against the wall.

Tying, Binding and Fixing Jobs

Around the garden and workshop, 1mm wire is handy for twisting together light trellis panels, securing bird netting and shade cloth to frames, making plant labels and hangers, binding garden stakes, fixing loose items in the shed and making temporary repairs. Because it holds a bend, it can also be shaped into hooks, loops and simple supports.

Galvanised for Outdoor Use

The zinc coating on galvanised wire protects the steel underneath, so it lasts much longer outdoors than plain steel wire. That makes it suited to garden jobs that stay out in the weather year round. In coastal areas with salt spray, or where wire is in constant contact with wet soil, the coating will wear faster over time.

Tips for Using Garden Wire

Cut wire with side cutters or pliers rather than bending it back and forth, which leaves a sharp, messy end. For plant support wires, pull the wire tight between fixings and twist the ends neatly around the vine eye or screw. Do not wrap bare wire directly around plant stems or tree trunks, as it can cut into the bark as the plant grows. Instead, tie plants to the wire with soft twine or plant ties, or slip a piece of old hose over the wire where it touches the plant. Wear gloves when handling wire, and turn sharp cut ends inward so they will not catch skin or clothing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Gardman Galvanised Wire 1mm x 50m used for?
It is used for tying, training, supporting and fixing, such as setting up support wires for climbers and fruit trees, securing netting and light trellis, and general household and workshop jobs.

What size is the Gardman Galvanised Garden Wire?
It is 1mm in diameter and 50m long.

Can 1mm galvanised wire be used for tying and supporting plants?
Yes, as support wires for climbers and trained plants. Tie stems to the wire with soft ties rather than wrapping bare wire around them, to avoid damaging the bark.

Is it strong enough for fencing?
No. 1mm wire is for light tying and support jobs. Fencing needs much heavier gauge fencing wire.

Will it rust?
The galvanised coating gives good rust resistance outdoors. In salty coastal air or constant wet soil, the coating wears faster over time.
