Vetafarm Finch & Budgie Crumbles 2kg: Complete Extruded Diet for Small Birds
Vetafarm Finch & Budgie Crumbles are a complete, balanced diet formulated by avian veterinarians for finches, canaries and budgerigars. Rather than a seed mix, these are extruded crumbles where every piece carries the full nutritional balance, so your birds can't pick out their favourites and leave the rest, which is the single biggest problem with feeding seed alone.
The extrusion process unlocks natural flavours, improves digestibility and ensures food safety. The crumbles are made with hand-selected Australian produce, with no artificial colours or by-products, and the current formula includes blueberry extract.
Built for Pet and Breeding Birds
The formulation targets growth, breeding, brain function and feather development. At a minimum 21% crude protein it sits well above a typical seed diet, and it's fortified with vitamins, minerals and calcium specifically to support egg formation and the strong development of young birds, along with general ongoing health. That makes it just as suitable for a breeding aviary as for a single pet budgie.
Ingredients & Analysis
Whole grains (wheat, maize, soybean), amino acids (lysine and methionine), soy protein isolate, vegetable oils, natural organic acids and blueberry flavour, with vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B9, B12, C, D3, E, H and K, and the minerals calcium, cobalt, copper, iodine, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, sodium, sulphur and zinc.
Guaranteed analysis: minimum 21% crude protein, minimum 8% crude fat, maximum 4% crude fibre, maximum 0.5% salt.
How to Feed
The crumbles are a complete diet, so no additional supplementation is needed. Vetafarm's feeding guide is:
-
Budgerigars: 90% crumbles, 10% seeds (millet sprays, seed heads)
-
Non-breeding finches: 90% crumbles, 5% seeds, 5% insects
-
Breeding omnivorous finches: 70% crumbles, 20% Vetafarm Insectapro, 5% seeds, 5% insects
As a daily guide, a small finch of around 15 g bodyweight (such as a zebra or Gouldian) needs a minimum of 2 g of crumbles per day, and an average budgerigar of around 40 g needs a minimum of 4 g per day. Fresh, clean water must be available at all times. Vegetables and treats can be offered as behavioural enrichment.
Converting From Seed
Birds used to seed need time to adjust, and budgies in particular typically take longer to convert than most other species, so introduce the crumbles gradually and be patient. One thing worth knowing: birds on an extruded diet produce droppings of a different colour and texture to seed-fed birds. That's completely normal, not a sign of a problem.
Store in a dry area below 30°C.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which birds are these crumbles for?
Finches, canaries and budgerigars, both pet and breeding birds.
What's the protein content?
Minimum 21% crude protein, with 8% minimum crude fat, 4% maximum fibre and 0.5% maximum salt.
How much should I feed?
A small finch of about 15 g bodyweight needs at least 2 g of crumbles daily, and an average 40 g budgie needs at least 4 g. Budgies should have around 90% crumbles with 10% seeds; non-breeding finches 90% crumbles with 5% seeds and 5% insects.
Do I still need to feed seed?
A small amount, yes. Vetafarm's guide keeps 5 to 10% of the diet as seed (such as millet sprays and seed heads), with insects added for finches. The crumbles do the nutritional work, and the seed adds variety and enrichment.
Do I need to add supplements?
No. The crumbles are a complete diet, so no additional dietary supplementation is necessary. Vegetables and treats can be offered as enrichment.
Why are my bird's droppings a different colour now?
That's normal. Birds fed extruded diets produce droppings of a different colour and texture to seed-fed birds. It's a change in the food, not a health problem.
My budgie won't eat them, what should I do?
Budgies typically take longer to convert than most other birds. Introduce the crumbles gradually alongside their current food, increasing the proportion over time, and be patient and persistent.
How should I store them?
In a dry area below 30°C, kept sealed to maintain freshness.
