Vetafarm Avimec 50ml: Topical Scaly Face Mite Treatment for Budgerigars and Cage Birds
Vetafarm Avimec is a topical "drop-on" liquid treatment for scaly face mite (Knemidocoptes pilae) in budgerigars and small cage birds. The active is ivermectin (1000µg/mL), and it's applied straight onto the bird's skin, so there's no mixing or dosing through water to worry about.
Scaly face mite are burrowing parasites that feed on keratin and dig into the featherless areas of the bird, leaving the tell-tale honeycomb crusting around the cere, beak, eyelids and often the legs and feet. Left untreated, the mites cause increasing tissue damage and can deform the beak to the point that eating and drinking become difficult, so it's a condition worth treating early. Because it's highly contagious and birds can carry it while looking normal, every bird in the aviary should be treated, not just the obviously affected ones.
Avimec is simple to use and is safe alongside food additives, supplements and other oral medications, so it fits easily into an existing care routine. It's for external use only.

FAQs
What is Vetafarm Avimec used for?
It's a topical treatment for scaly face mite (Knemidocoptes pilae) in budgerigars and other small cage birds. The mite causes crusty, honeycomb-like lesions around the beak, cere, eyes, legs and feet.
What is the active ingredient?
Ivermectin at 1000µg/mL, in a topical "drop-on" liquid.
How do I apply it?
Apply to an unfeathered area of skin: 1 drop for birds under 30g, or 2 drops for birds 30g to 100g. Repeat weekly for three doses, and treat every bird in the aviary. It's for external use only.
How long until my bird recovers?
Full recovery can take up to 6 weeks, as it takes time for the skin to heal and for the full mite life cycle to be broken. Keep to the weekly treatment schedule.
Can I use it on other birds, or use cattle ivermectin instead?
It's intended for budgerigars and small cage birds. Do not use cattle or livestock pour-on ivermectin on birds, as those products are far too strong and can be fatal.
Where can I buy Vetafarm Avimec in Australia?
Order online for delivery across Australia, or pick up in-store at Bonnyrigg, NSW.
