Description

BSP Female Reducing Socket for Joining Two Different Thread Sizes

The SRS Reducing Socket is a black plastic female x female fitting with a larger BSP thread at one end and a smaller BSP thread at the other. It joins two male threaded fittings of different sizes in a straight line, such as a 1" male adaptor to a ¾" valve or a ¾" riser to a ½" tap, in garden, landscape and drip irrigation systems.

Stepping Down Between Two Thread Sizes

Irrigation systems rarely use one thread size throughout. A main line might run at 1", while taps, timers, sprinklers and small valves are often ¾" or ½". A reducing socket bridges that gap in a single fitting, so you do not need to stack a socket and a separate bush to change sizes. Fewer fittings means fewer joints and fewer places for a drip to start.

Common Jobs for a Reducer

Typical uses include fitting a smaller tap or tap timer to the end of a larger riser, connecting a large male adaptor on a poly main to a smaller valve or filter, stepping down from a pump outlet to a smaller irrigation line, and joining old and new threaded parts of different sizes during repairs. It works in either direction, so the same fitting can also step up from a smaller thread to a larger one.

Flow Through a Reduction

Water can only pass through the smaller end as fast as its size allows, so a reducer will limit flow to the capacity of the smaller thread. That is fine for feeding taps, drip zones and small sprinklers, but avoid reducing a main line more than needed, as an unnecessary step down can cut pressure and flow to everything downstream.

Tightening Two Different Thread Sizes

Confirm the size of each male fitting before you start, as both ends need to match exactly. Wrap each male thread with thread tape, winding it the same way the thread tightens. Screw the larger fitting in first by hand, then hold the reducer by its hex with a spanner and add a small extra turn. Repeat with the smaller fitting, taking extra care, as the smaller plastic thread is easier to strip or crack. Turn the water on slowly and check both ends.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a reducing socket used for?
It joins two male threaded fittings of different sizes in a straight line. Common uses include fitting a smaller tap to a larger riser, connecting a large poly adaptor to a smaller valve, and stepping down from a pump outlet to an irrigation line.

How do you connect two different threaded pipe sizes?
Use a female reducing socket with one end matching each thread size. Wrap both male threads with thread tape and screw them into the matching ends of the reducer.

What is the difference between a reducing socket and a standard socket?
A standard socket has the same thread size at both ends and joins two equal fittings. A reducing socket has a larger thread at one end and a smaller one at the other, so it joins fittings of different sizes.

Does a reducing socket lower water pressure?
It limits flow to the capacity of the smaller end. For taps, timers and drip zones this is usually fine, but avoid unnecessary reductions on main lines.

Can it be used for gas or air lines?
No. It is designed for irrigation and water systems. Gas lines need certified gas fittings installed by a licensed gas fitter.

Where can I buy a BSP reducer fitting in Bonnyrigg?
The SRS Reducing Socket is available from BPG Supplies, with local pickup from our store in Bonnyrigg in Sydney's south-west and delivery across Australia.
