Olsson's Pool Salt: Australian Solar Sea Salt for Saltwater Pools
Olsson's Australian Pool Salt is a high-purity, naturally evaporated sea salt made for residential saltwater pool chlorinators. It's a dry, refined sodium chloride produced in Australia by solar evaporation, using seawater from the Great Barrier Reef and the Great Australian Bight. Olsson's has made solar sea salt since 1948 and is Australia's oldest family-owned sea salt maker. This 20kg bag suits topping up a home pool or adding salt after backwashing and rain.
How Salt for Saltwater Pools Works
In a saltwater pool, salt is the raw material for chlorine. As pool water flows through the chlorinator's salt cell, a small electrical current converts the dissolved salt into chlorine, which sanitises the water. The chlorine then turns back into salt, so salt isn't used up quickly. Levels drop mainly through backwashing, splash-out, overflow after heavy rain and draining, so pools need regular top-ups.
Made by Solar Evaporation
Olsson's makes its salt by letting sun and wind evaporate seawater in a series of large ponds. As the water concentrates, salt crystals form on the pond floor, then they're harvested, washed, dried and refined for pool use. Production follows HACCP and SQF quality systems, so you get consistent, clean-dissolving pool salt.
How Much Salt Does a Pool Need?
- Check your chlorinator manual for its recommended salt level. Most residential chlorinators run at around 4,000 to 6,000ppm, while low-salt and mineral systems run lower.
- Test your current salt level with a test strip, meter or pool shop water test.
- As a guide, 1kg of salt raises the salt level of 1,000 litres by about 1,000ppm.
Example: a 50,000 litre pool that reads 4,000ppm, with a target of 5,000ppm, needs about 50kg, or two and a half 20kg bags.
Add slightly less than you calculate, let it dissolve, then retest. It's easy to add more salt, but the only way to lower it is to drain and refill some of the water.
How to Add Pool Salt
- Test and balance your pool water first, with pH ideally between 7.2 and 7.4.
- Turn off the salt chlorinator and remove or disconnect any automatic pool cleaner.
- Keep the pump running so water circulates.
- Pour the salt evenly across the shallow end and around the pool, away from the skimmer box.
- Brush the floor to help the salt dissolve and stop it settling in one spot.
- Let the salt circulate for about 24 hours, then turn the chlorinator back on and retest.
Which Salt Is Best for a Pool?
Use a high-purity, pool-grade salt. Avoid iodised table salt and salts with anti-caking agents, which can cause staining and discolouration, and avoid unrefined rock salt, which may carry impurities. A refined sea salt made for pools, like Olsson's, dissolves cleanly and works with salt chlorinators.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Olsson's Australian Pool Salt used for?
It's used in saltwater swimming pools. The chlorinator turns the dissolved salt into chlorine, which sanitises the water and keeps it clear.
Is Olsson's Pool Salt pure sea salt?
Yes. It's Australian sea salt produced by solar evaporation, then refined into a dry sodium chloride made specifically for swimming pools.
How much salt does a pool need?
It depends on your pool volume, your current reading and your chlorinator's target level. As a guide, 1kg of salt raises 1,000 litres by about 1,000ppm, so a 50,000 litre pool needs about 50kg to rise by 1,000ppm.
What salt should I use in a saltwater pool?
Use a high-purity pool salt made for chlorinators. Avoid iodised table salt or salt with anti-caking agents, which can stain pool surfaces.
Can you use sea salt in a swimming pool?
Yes, as long as it's refined, pool-grade sea salt. Olsson's pool salt is sea salt refined specifically for swimming pools and salt chlorinators.
Which salt is best for a pool?
The best pool salt is high-purity sodium chloride made for pools, with no iodine or anti-caking additives. Fine or fast-dissolving grains dissolve more quickly and are less likely to settle on the floor.
How long does pool salt take to dissolve?
Usually up to 24 hours with the pump running. Brushing the pool floor helps it dissolve faster and stops salt sitting in one spot.
