GIANTZ Garden Auger: Dig Planting Holes in Seconds
The GIANTZ Power Garden Auger turns your cordless or corded drill into a fast planting tool. Instead of digging hole after hole with a trowel, fit the auger to your drill and bore neat, round planting holes in seconds. Measuring 75mm (7.5cm) wide and 600mm (60cm) long, it's ideal for planting bulbs, seedlings, tubestock and small shrubs, and for mixing compost or fertiliser into garden beds. Made from heavy-duty steel with a spiral flight, it's built to handle regular use around the garden. A pair of gloves is included.
What Is a 75mm Garden Auger Used For?
A 75mm auger digs holes about the size of a standard seedling pot or tubestock, making it perfect for:
- Planting bulbs such as daffodils, tulips and jonquils
- Planting seedlings and tubestock in garden beds, hedges and native gardens
- Mass planting groundcovers and hedges quickly
- Digging holes for small stakes, garden edging and solar lights
- Adding fertiliser, compost or water crystals around established plants
- Loosening compacted soil in garden beds and pots
Works With Most Power Drills
The auger shaft fits into a standard 13mm drill chuck, so it's compatible with most household power drills. The spiral flight lifts soil up and out of the hole as it turns, leaving a clean, round hole ready for planting.

How Deep Can a 600mm Auger Dig?
The auger is 600mm long, but part of the shaft sits inside the drill chuck, so the usable digging depth is a little less, typically up to around 45 to 50cm depending on your drill. That's more than enough for bulbs (usually 10 to 20cm deep), seedlings and most tubestock. For deeper holes, drill down in stages, lifting the auger out regularly to clear the soil.
How to Use a Garden Auger Safely
- Check before you dig: make sure there are no underground cables, gas lines or water pipes where you're drilling. In Australia, you can check through Before You Dig Australia (BYDA).
- Use the right drill: a cordless drill with good torque and a side handle gives the most control. Set it to a low speed.
- Soften hard ground: water dry, hard or clay soil the day before so the auger bites easily.
- Drill in stages: push gently and lift the auger out often to clear soil and stop it binding.
- Watch for rocks and roots: stop if the auger catches, as the drill can twist in your hands.
- Wear gloves and eye protection, and keep a firm grip with both hands.
