Tripoli Broad Bean Seeds: Bigger Pods and Heavier Crops
Tripoli is a high-yielding broad bean variety known for its long pods and large beans. Pods reach up to 30cm and regularly hold 6 to 7 big seeds each, giving a much heavier harvest than standard broad beans. Tripoli also copes with warmer weather better than the common Aquadulce variety, making it a reliable choice across much of Australia. This 500g pack, repacked by BPG Supplies, gives you plenty of seed for large veggie patches, market gardens or several sowings through the season.
Why Growers Choose Tripoli
The compact plants grow to about 1m tall and hold up better in wind than taller varieties, so they need less staking. Their tolerance of warmer conditions means a more dependable crop in regions where late winter and early spring warm up quickly. The beans can be eaten fresh straight from the pod, cooked young, or left on the plant to dry for soups, stews and dips, and Tripoli is grown by both professional growers and home gardeners for its yield potential.
A Soil-Building Crop for Your Garden
Like all beans, broad beans are legumes that work with soil bacteria to fix nitrogen from the air into their roots. After harvest, dig the plants back into the soil or add them to the compost to return that nitrogen to the garden, ready for leafy crops that follow. Broad beans also make a useful green manure crop in beds that need a rest over winter.

When and How to Plant Broad Bean Seeds in Australia
Broad beans are a cool-season crop, sown from autumn to early winter.
- Temperate areas (including Sydney): sow from March to June.
- Cool and cold areas: sow from March to May; in very cold districts, a late winter to early spring sowing also works.
- Subtropical areas: sow from April to June.
- Tropical areas: sow in the cooler dry season, around May to June.
Sow seeds directly into the garden in a sunny spot, about 5cm deep and 25cm apart, in double rows 30cm apart. Seedlings usually appear in 7 to 14 days. Water well at sowing, then only lightly until seedlings emerge, as soggy soil can rot the seeds. Broad beans don't need high-nitrogen fertiliser; a bed prepared with compost is ideal.
Growing Tips for a Bumper Crop
Once plants start to flower and the first pods are 7 to 10cm long, pinch out the growing tips. This deters aphids, which love the soft tops, and directs energy into filling the pods. In windy spots, run string between stakes along each side of the row to keep plants upright. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged while plants are flowering and podding. Pick pods regularly once the beans are plump and before the pods turn leathery, as frequent picking keeps plants producing.
