Description
Black Polythene Plastic Roll 4m x 100um x 50m: Garden and Landscaping Film
This black polythene plastic roll is a heavy-duty, general-purpose film for gardening, landscaping and building jobs around the property. Each roll measures 4 metres wide, 100 microns thick and 50 metres long, giving 200 square metres of cover from a single roll. The black colour blocks light, which is what makes it useful for weed suppression, while the 100 micron gauge gives it enough strength to stand up to being laid over ground, soil and site work.
Because it's a solid (non-woven, non-perforated) film, it blocks light and water rather than letting them through. That's ideal where you want to smother weeds, cover and protect a surface, or keep an area dry, but for planted beds where you want water to reach the soil, you'd cut planting holes or use it more as a temporary cover than a permanent breathable weed mat.
Common Uses
-
Weed suppression and smothering over cleared ground
-
Ground cover and general site protection during landscaping
-
A moisture and vapour barrier layer under paths, paving or fill
-
Covering and protecting soil, materials or equipment
-
Lining or backing where a solid black film is needed
Working With It
The film cuts easily with a knife or scissors, so you can size it to the area you're working on. Lay it flat, overlap the edges where you're joining widths, and weigh or pin the edges down with pegs, timber, soil or pavers so it doesn't lift in wind. Where you're planting through it, cut a cross or hole at each plant position. For weed suppression, covering the film with mulch, gravel or soil protects it from UV and foot traffic and gives a tidier finish, since bare polythene left in full sun breaks down faster over time.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size is the roll?
It's 4 metres wide, 100 microns thick and 50 metres long, which covers up to 200 square metres.
What is black polythene used for in the garden?
Mainly weed suppression and ground cover, plus general jobs like protecting soil and surfaces or acting as a moisture barrier under paths and paving.
Is it a breathable weed mat?
No. It's a solid film that blocks light and water. For planted beds you'd cut holes for plants, or use a woven weed mat where you need water to pass through.
How thick is 100 microns?
It's a solid builder's and garden grade film, thick enough for laying over ground and general site use while still being easy to cut and handle.
How do I stop it blowing away?
Weigh or pin the edges with pegs, timber, soil or pavers, and cover it with mulch or gravel where you can, which also protects it from sun.
Where can I buy black polythene plastic roll in Australia?
It's available from BPG Supplies (Bonnyrigg Produce & Garden Supplies), with local pickup in Bonnyrigg NSW and delivery across Australia.
