Barmac Bunny Bait 2.5kg: Pindone Oat Bait for Rabbit Control
Bunny Bait is a ready-to-use pindone oat bait developed off the back of more than a decade of intensive rabbit control work by a leading vertebrate pest control operation. It's built for the many suburban and industrial rabbit problems where fencing, warren destruction or fumigation on their own aren't enough to knock numbers down, or are simply too expensive. In those situations, strategic poisoning with pindone, used alongside other control methods, tends to be the most effective approach. It's a Barmac product, part of the Amgrow range.
How Pindone Works
Pindone is a first-generation anticoagulant, in the same family as common rat baits. It works by blocking the way the body recycles vitamin K, which the blood needs in order to clot. Without it, an animal that has taken a lethal amount dies from internal bleeding. Importantly, it's a chronic, multiple-feed poison: a rabbit needs to feed on the bait several times over a number of days to take in a lethal dose, and death is delayed rather than immediate.
Why Pindone Suits Built-Up Areas
That slow, multiple-feed action is exactly what makes pindone usable where the alternative, 1080, can't go. Because it takes repeated feeds, doesn't build up in the food chain, and has an effective antidote, the risks to people and pets are far lower. A person would have to eat a very large quantity of oat bait in one sitting to be at risk, and rabbit carcasses don't normally hold enough pindone to harm a dog or cat that eats one. Just as importantly, if a pet or animal is accidentally poisoned, vitamin K1 (phytomenadione) is an effective antidote that a vet can administer, which is not the case with 1080. This combination is why pindone is the poison of choice for rabbits in urban, residential and closely settled areas.
How to Use It
Free feeding is the part people most often skip, and it's essential. Before laying any poison, put out the same oat bait without poison so the rabbits find it, get used to it and start feeding confidently. Only once they're feeding do you switch to the poison bait. For best results, the poison bait should be offered on three occasions at 3 to 5 day intervals, laid at the rate suited to your land area and rabbit density, in the spots where the rabbits are active. Because pindone needs multiple feeds, keeping the bait available across those days is what actually clears the population.
Your Legal Responsibilities
Pindone baiting is regulated, and using it correctly is a legal requirement, not just good practice. Before you start, check with your state or territory authority, since purchase and use restrictions vary. You must notify your neighbours of your intention to lay baits. You must signpost the poisoned area with the prescribed signs (a gate sign is supplied in the pack). And throughout the program you must search the baited area and surrounds for dead rabbits, collecting and disposing of all carcasses and any uneaten bait according to the label. Only use it for rabbit control, and strictly in line with the directions of the relevant state authority.
Keeping Pets and Non-Target Animals Safe
Dogs, cats, livestock and children must be kept away from baits and poisoned carcasses. While secondary poisoning from eating a carcass is a low risk, a dog that eats the bait itself can be poisoned, so dogs and cats shouldn't have unrestrained access to a baited area during the program or afterwards until every carcass has been removed. Some people muzzle their dogs as an added precaution. Pindone can also affect some non-target birds and wildlife, which is another reason the signage and thorough carcass collection matter. Early signs of poisoning in a pet include becoming sluggish and a noticeable whitening of the gums. If you suspect it, contact a vet straight away, since the vitamin K1 antidote works well when given promptly.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the active ingredient in Bunny Bait?
Pindone at 0.5 g/kg, present as a sodium salt. It's a first-generation anticoagulant, in the same family as common rat baits.
How does it work?
Pindone stops the blood clotting by blocking the recycling of vitamin K. Because it's a chronic poison, rabbits need to feed on it several times over a number of days to take in a lethal dose, so death is delayed rather than immediate.
Can I use it in a suburban or built-up area?
Yes. That's pindone's main advantage over 1080, which can't be used in built-up areas. Its slow, multiple-feed action and the availability of an antidote make it suitable for urban and closely settled areas, provided you follow the rules.
Do I need to free-feed first?
Yes, and it's essential. Lay the oat bait without poison first so rabbits start feeding on it, then switch to the poison bait. For best results, offer the poison bait on three occasions at 3 to 5 day intervals.
What are my legal responsibilities when baiting?
You need to notify your neighbours, signpost the poisoned area with the supplied sign, collect and dispose of all dead rabbits and uneaten bait, and follow the directions of your state or territory authority. Check local requirements before you start.
Is it safe around dogs and cats?
Secondary poisoning from carcasses is a low risk, but a dog that eats the bait directly can be poisoned. Keep pets away from baits and carcasses, remove all carcasses promptly, and if you suspect poisoning, see a vet, as the vitamin K1 antidote is effective.
What comes in the pack?
Ready-to-use dyed and sterilised oat bait, a gate sign to mark the poisoned area, and baiting instructions.
Where can I buy Barmac Bunny Bait in Australia?
You can buy the 2.5kg pack from BPG Supplies, shipped Australia-wide.
