Description

Searles Strong & Hardy Lawn Seed 750g

Searles Strong & Hardy Lawn Seed is a fast-establishing grass seed blend developed for high-traffic lawns, oversowing and general landscaping projects. It produces a deep green lawn once mature and is particularly suited to open areas receiving full sun.

The blend combines fast-growing annual and perennial ryegrasses with couch and fescue varieties. This gives the lawn quick initial coverage while establishing a mixed grass surface suited to regular household use. One 750g pack covers approximately 25m² when applied at the recommended lawn sowing rate.

Why This Blend Works

Annual and perennial ryegrass make up most of the mix, helping the lawn establish quickly and cover bare soil. Couch and fescue varieties add further texture and variety to the finished lawn.

The blend is useful for repairing worn patches, improving thin grass or oversowing an existing lawn that has lost density. It can also be used to establish a new lawn across a properly prepared small area.

Seed Blend

  • Perennial ryegrass: 45%

  • Annual ryegrass: 30%

  • Hulled couch: 10%

  • Unhulled couch: 5%

  • Creeping red fescue: 5%

  • Turf-type fescue: 5%

This combination is formulated to produce fast establishment, a deep green colour and a hard-wearing lawn suited to areas that receive regular foot traffic.

How to Sow

Remove weeds, stones and old lawn debris from the area. Loosen the top layer of soil with a rake and level the surface so the seed can make good contact with the ground.

  • Apply at approximately 750g per 25m²

  • Spread the seed as evenly as possible

  • Lightly rake the seed into the topsoil

  • Avoid burying the seed too deeply

  • Water gently so the seed is not washed away

  • Keep the soil consistently moist while the grass germinates

  • Limit foot traffic until the new lawn is established

For a more even application, divide the seed into two portions. Spread the first portion in one direction, then apply the second portion across the area at a right angle.

Do not allow the surface to dry out during early establishment. Water with a fine spray rather than a strong stream that could move the seed or create bare patches.

When to Sow

Searles recommends sowing Strong & Hardy Lawn Seed during autumn or spring. These seasons generally provide milder temperatures and make it easier to maintain consistent soil moisture while the seed establishes.

It is best suited to full-sun areas. Avoid sowing immediately before heavy rain, during extreme heat or when regular watering cannot be maintained.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Searles Strong & Hardy Lawn Seed used for?

It is used to establish new grass, repair bare lawn patches, thicken thin areas and oversow existing lawns. The blend is particularly suited to high-traffic and full-sun areas.

What grass varieties are in the mix?

The blend contains 45% perennial ryegrass, 30% annual ryegrass, 10% hulled couch, 5% unhulled couch, 5% creeping red fescue and 5% turf-type fescue.

How much area does a 750g pack cover?

One 750g pack covers approximately 25m² when used at the manufacturer’s recommended lawn sowing rate.

Is it suitable for high-traffic lawns?

Yes. Searles specifically recommends Strong & Hardy Lawn Seed for areas receiving regular foot traffic. Allow the new grass to establish before returning the area to normal use.

Can I use it to repair bare lawn patches?

Yes. Remove dead grass and weeds, loosen the soil, spread the seed evenly and keep the area moist until the new grass has established.

Can it be used for oversowing?

Yes. It is well suited to oversowing an existing lawn to improve density and cover thin or worn areas. Mow the existing lawn short and rake the surface before applying the seed.

Is it suitable for shaded areas?

Searles describes this blend as ideal for full sun. Results may be weaker in heavily shaded areas, so a lawn seed specifically formulated for shade may be more suitable there.

When is the best time to sow it?

Autumn and spring are the recommended sowing periods. Avoid extreme heat and make sure the soil can be kept consistently moist during germination.

How often should I water newly sown lawn seed?

Water gently after sowing and keep the soil surface consistently moist. The exact frequency depends on temperature, wind and soil conditions, but the seed should not be allowed to dry out during early establishment.

When can I mow the new lawn?

Wait until the grass is firmly established and tall enough to mow without pulling young plants from the soil. Use a sharp mower blade and avoid removing more than one-third of the grass height during the first cut.
