Description

Hermez Grow Black Plastic Planter Bags 20+12 x 24cm (1000 Pack)

Hermez Grow planter bags are small, premium-quality poly bags used right throughout Australia in large commercial nurseries, home and hobby nurseries, and landscaping. They're manufactured here in Australia using the highest quality materials and UV stabilisers, which matters a great deal under the Australian sun, where cheaper, non-stabilised plastic goes brittle and splits within a season. This is the bulk 1000 bag pack.

Understanding the Size: 20+12 x 24cm

Planter bag sizing confuses a lot of first-time buyers, so it's worth explaining. The measurement 20+12 x 24 cm means:

  • 20 cm is the flat width of the bag as it lies unfilled

  • +12 cm is the gusset, the folded side panel that opens out when you fill the bag, giving it a wider base and letting it stand up

  • 24 cm is the height of the bag

So a bag that looks narrow and flat in the box opens out considerably once it's filled with potting mix. This is a small bag size, well suited to seedlings, tube stock potting-on, herbs, small shrubs, propagation and general nursery production.

Why Nurseries Use Bags Instead of Pots

There are practical reasons planter bags dominate commercial nursery production:

  • Storage. A thousand bags takes up a fraction of the space that a thousand rigid pots would, since they pack flat until you fill them.

  • Cost. Bags are considerably cheaper per unit than moulded pots, which adds up fast at production volumes.

  • Weight and freight. They're much lighter to store, move and transport.

  • Root health. The flexible sides don't encourage roots to spiral around the inside the way smooth rigid pots can.

  • Planting out. Bags are quick and easy to cut or slip away at planting time, with minimal disturbance to the root ball.

Made for Australian Conditions

These are made in Australia from quality polyethylene with UV stabilisers built into the plastic, so they hold up to prolonged sun exposure rather than degrading and crumbling in the first hot summer. Black is the standard nursery colour for good reason: it blocks light from reaching the root zone, which prevents algae growth on the mix and stops roots being light-pruned at the bag wall.

Worth noting: black bags do absorb heat. That's an advantage in cooler months and cooler climates, giving roots a warmer growing medium, but in exposed full sun over an Australian summer, closely packed black bags can get hot. Commercial growers manage this by grouping bags together so they shade each other, and by watering appropriately.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does 20+12 x 24cm mean?
It's standard planter bag sizing. 20 cm is the flat width, +12 cm is the gusset (the folded side panel that opens out when filled), and 24 cm is the height. The bag looks narrow flat but expands to a much wider base once filled.

What are black plastic planter bags made of?
They're made from polyethylene (poly) with UV stabilisers added, which is what allows them to withstand extended sun exposure without becoming brittle. These are manufactured in Australia.

What can I grow in this size bag?
It's a small bag size, well suited to seedlings, potting on tube stock, herbs, small shrubs, propagation and general nursery production. For trees and larger shrubs you'd want a larger bag size.

Why use planter bags instead of pots?
Bags are cheaper at volume, far more space efficient (they pack flat), lighter to handle and transport, and easier to remove at planting time. They're the standard across the commercial nursery industry for exactly these reasons.

Are black plastic planter bags recyclable?
Poly bags are technically recyclable, but black plastic is difficult for kerbside sorting systems to detect and process, so it often isn't accepted in household recycling. Check with your local council, and look for nursery pot and soft plastic take-back programs in your area. The most practical option for most growers is simply reusing bags for several growing cycles.

Do black bags get too hot in summer?
They absorb more heat than lighter colours, which helps in cooler weather but needs managing in full summer sun. Growers typically group bags together so they shade each other, and water appropriately during hot spells.

How many bags are in this pack?
1000 bags.
