Avitrol Plus is a convenient, broad-spectrum liquid wormer for ornamental caged birds, made by Mavlab. It controls all the common intestinal worms in one product, and its big advantage over a single-active wormer is that it treats tapeworm as well as roundworm-type worms. The syrup can be added to drinking water for easy whole-flock dosing, or given directly by beak or crop for individual birds. This larger 100mL concentrate suits bigger aviaries and keepers who worm regularly.

It contains two actives that work in different ways: levamisole hydrochloride (10mg/mL) paralyses roundworm-type parasites, and praziquantel (2mg/mL) targets tapeworm. Together they control threadworm (Capillaria), caecal worm (Heterakis), roundworm (Ascaridia), gape worm (Syngamus), gizzard worm (Acuaria) and tapeworm (Raillietina) in caged birds.

Worming is most effective when the whole aviary is treated at once and paired with good coop hygiene, since birds pick worms back up from a dirty environment and from intermediate hosts like insects.

Dosage

• In water: mix 0.5mL (12 drops from the dropper) into 20mL of clean drinking water, or 25mL per litre

• Provide the medicated water as the sole source of drinking water for 24 hours, and feed only seed during this time

• Make the solution up fresh just before dosing

• In hot weather, dilute further to allow for increased water intake

• Direct dosing: the syrup can be given by beak, or by crop needle/tube if you're confident it's correctly placed

• Repeat the treatment after 14 days with fresh solution

How to Use and Good Practice

• Treat all birds in the same cage or loft at the same time

• Do not feed birds for 24 hours before, or for 3 hours after, direct treatment

• Clean and disinfect the cage or loft about 3 days after treatment, and ideally move birds into a clean cage 48 hours after the first dose while the old one is scrubbed out

• To prevent reinfestation, keep the aviary clean and dry and limit access to intermediate hosts such as grasshoppers, cockroaches and earthworms

• Wild birds can introduce worms through their droppings, so keep them out of the aviary where possible

Important Notes

• Not recommended for Gouldian finches

• Parrots and finches are less tolerant of levamisole than pigeons, so treat these with caution

• Do not dose in extremely hot, dry weather, and do not treat stressed birds or birds that are feeding young

• Some regurgitation may occur after dosing, which is not considered harmful; avoid handling birds for about 10 minutes after treatment

• This product is for ornamental cage birds and is not intended for birds kept to produce eggs or meat for people; a meat withholding period of 7 days applies

• Harmful if swallowed by people: avoid contact with eyes and skin, wash hands after use, and store in a cool, dry place out of reach of children and pets
