ELI Plastic Poultry Feeder 12kg (PPF21A): Hanging or Floor Standing Chook Feeder
A 12kg feeder holds a serious amount of feed, which is the whole point. Instead of topping up a small feeder every day or two, you fill this one and leave it, so your birds have feed continuously available and you're not out there constantly. Handy for larger flocks, and genuinely useful if you're away for a few days.
It suits bantams through to standard and larger sized chickens, and it can either be hung or stood on the ground.
Hang It If You Can
The feeder can sit on the floor, but hanging it from a chain at feeding height is the better option, and worth doing if your setup allows.
Chickens scratch. It's constant and instinctive, and anything at ground level gets showered with dirt, litter and droppings kicked backwards as they work. Raising the feeder to roughly the height of your birds' backs means far less debris ends up in the feed section. That keeps the feed clean, cuts down on waste, and reduces the risk of feed being fouled by droppings, which is worth avoiding for flock health.
It also stops feed spilling out onto the ground, where it attracts rodents and wild birds.
Simple and Reliable
There's nothing mechanical to fail. Feed sits in the hopper and gravity feeds it down into the tray as the birds eat, so it keeps supplying feed until the hopper empties. No power, no batteries, no moving parts.
Plastic construction means it won't rust like galvanised feeders do, it's easy to hose out and wash properly, and it's light enough to move around and refill without a struggle even when full.
How to Use
Fill the hopper with your layer pellets, mash or grain, then either hang it from a chain at around the height of your birds' backs, or stand it on a level surface. Top up the feed as needed.
Raise the height as young birds grow so it stays at the right level. Keep the feeder under cover or in the coop where possible, since feed that gets wet will clump, block the flow and eventually go mouldy. Empty and clean it out periodically rather than continually topping up over old feed at the bottom.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much feed does it hold?
12 kg, which is enough to keep a decent-sized flock going for a good while between refills.
Should I hang it or stand it on the ground?
Hanging is better if you can. Chickens scratch constantly and kick dirt and litter into anything at ground level, so raising the feeder keeps the feed much cleaner and reduces waste.
What height should I hang it at?
Roughly the height of your birds' backs. That lets them eat comfortably while making it hard to scratch debris up into the tray. Raise it as young birds grow.
What birds is it suitable for?
Bantams, standard chickens and larger breeds.
Can I use it with pellets, mash and grain?
Yes. Pellets and grain flow best. Fine mash can be more prone to clumping, particularly if it picks up moisture, so keep an eye on the flow.
Does it need power or batteries?
No. It's gravity fed, so feed drops down as birds eat from the tray. There's nothing to fail.
How do I keep the feed from going off?
Keep the feeder under cover so it stays dry, and periodically empty and clean it rather than always topping up over older feed at the bottom.
Is it easy to clean?
Yes. Being plastic, it hoses out easily and doesn't rust the way galvanised feeders can.
