Yates Leaf Shine 225g: Gloss and Protection for Hard-Leaved Indoor Plants
Yates Leaf Shine is a ready-to-use aerosol that cleans and adds a lasting gloss to the foliage of hard-leaved indoor plants. It's made for the smooth, firm-leaved houseplants people keep on display, such as rubber plants, fiddle-leaf figs, philodendrons and monstera, and it's just as useful on dried leaf and flower arrangements. The 225g can is ready to spray, with no mixing needed.
The formulation is based on a light petroleum oil chosen for its high sheen. Rather than sitting as a thick film, the oil gives a glossy finish that lasts for several weeks without decomposing, and it doesn't interfere with the plant's natural growth. It's a cosmetic and protective product, not a fertiliser or an insecticide; its job is to lift dust and leave clean, glossy foliage.

-

Which Plants to Use It On
This is important, because it's where a lot of leaf-shine damage happens. Yates Leaf Shine is for hard, glossy-leaved plants like rubber plants, figs, philodendrons and similar. It should not be used on plants with soft or tender foliage, specifically ferns and African violets, where it can damage the leaves. If you're not sure whether your plant has hard enough foliage, treat one leaf first and check it before doing the whole plant.
How to Apply It
Clean the leaves first with a damp cloth so you're not sealing dust onto the leaf, then shake the can well. Hold it at least 15cm from the plant and spray sparingly onto the upper side of the leaves only. It dries quickly, and after that an occasional dust-off is enough to bring the shine back. Don't apply when it's hot, or when the soil is dry and the plant is under moisture stress, as stressed foliage is more likely to be marked.
Because it's an aerosol built around petroleum oil, it's flammable and pressurised: keep it away from heat, flames and sparks, don't spray near an open flame, don't pierce or burn the can, use it in a well-ventilated space, and store it below normal room heat out of direct sun and out of reach of children.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Yates Leaf Shine used for?
It cleans and adds a lasting gloss to the hard, smooth leaves of indoor plants, and it also works on dried leaf and flower arrangements.
What is it made from?
The active component is a light petroleum oil chosen for its high sheen, which gives lasting gloss without interfering with the plant's growth.
Can I use it on ferns or African violets?
No. It's for hard-leaved plants only. Yates specifically advises against using it on tender foliage like ferns and African violets, as it can damage them.
Do I need to wipe the leaves first?
Yes. Clean the leaves with a damp cloth before spraying so you're removing dust rather than sealing it under the gloss.
Will it block the leaf and stop the plant growing?
No. The oil is designed not to interfere with the plant's natural growth. Spray sparingly to the upper leaf surface as directed.
Where can I buy Yates Leaf Shine 225g in Australia?
It's available from BPG Supplies (Bonnyrigg Produce & Garden Supplies), with local pickup in Bonnyrigg NSW and delivery across Australia.
