Description

Avigrain Hulled Oats

Avigrain Hulled Oats are de-husked oat groats suitable for inclusion in seed blends for budgies, cockatiels, lovebirds, canaries, finches and other compatible grain-eating birds.

Removing the outer husk exposes the oat kernel, making it easier for smaller birds to access than whole oats with the husk intact. The grain can be added to a balanced birdseed mix or offered in controlled quantities as part of a varied feeding program.

Why Choose Hulled Oats?

Hulled oats provide a soft, palatable grain that is commonly used in small-bird, parrot and conditioning seed blends.

Unlike whole oats, the fibrous outer hull has already been removed. This reduces discarded husks in the feeder and makes the oat kernel accessible to birds that may struggle to open whole feed oats.

Suitable Birds

Hulled oats may be included in feeding programs for:

  • Budgies

  • Cockatiels

  • Peachfaces and lovebirds

  • Canaries

  • Finches

  • Small parrots

  • Compatible aviary birds

  • Pigeons and larger grain-eating birds

The appropriate amount depends on the species, activity level and rest of the diet. Hulled oats should not become the only ingredient birds selectively consume.

How to Feed

Offer Avigrain Hulled Oats as one component of a balanced birdseed mixture.

  • Add a controlled quantity to a species-appropriate seed blend

  • Introduce gradually when changing the existing diet

  • Use a clean and dry feeding container

  • Offer only an amount the birds can consume while fresh

  • Remove uneaten grain and empty husks regularly

  • Discard oats that become damp, mouldy or contaminated

  • Keep feeders away from leaking drinkers and wet aviary floors

  • Provide clean drinking water at all times

Not a Complete Bird Diet

Avigrain Hulled Oats are a single feed ingredient and do not provide every nutrient required for long-term bird health.

They should be offered alongside other species-appropriate foods, which may include a suitable formulated diet, vegetables and controlled quantities of additional seeds or grains. The correct balance varies between bird species and individual health requirements.

Can Hulled Oats Be Soaked or Sprouted?

Hulled oats may be soaked for selected feeding programs, but removing the protective husk makes them more vulnerable to moisture-related spoilage.

  • Prepare only a small quantity

  • Use clean containers and fresh water

  • Rinse thoroughly

  • Keep soaked grain refrigerated where appropriate

  • Remove uneaten moist food promptly

  • Never feed oats with mould, fermentation or an unusual smell

  • Wash the feeder thoroughly after use

Hulled oats may not sprout as reliably as intact whole oats because the kernel can be damaged during de-husking.

Poultry & Livestock Use

Hulled oats may be included as an ingredient in properly balanced poultry or livestock rations, but they should not replace a complete feed.

Chickens, quail, sheep and other animals have specific protein, mineral, vitamin and energy requirements. Use a formulated feed appropriate to the animal’s species, age and production stage as the main ration.

Storage

  • Reseal the bag after opening

  • Store in a cool, dry and ventilated area

  • Keep the oats away from rain and humidity

  • Raise bulk bags above damp flooring

  • Protect from rodents and insects

  • Store separately from chemicals and strong odours

  • Discard grain showing mould, moisture or pest contamination

Frequently Asked Questions

What are hulled oats?

Hulled oats are oat kernels with the tough outer husk removed. They are also commonly called oat groats or naked oats.

Are Avigrain Hulled Oats suitable for budgies?

Yes. Hulled oats are commonly used as an ingredient in budgie seed blends. They should be offered as part of a varied diet rather than as the only feed.

Can cockatiels eat hulled oats?

Yes. Cockatiels can eat hulled oats in controlled quantities as part of a suitable mixed-seed or balanced feeding program.

Are hulled oats suitable for finches and canaries?

Yes. Their de-husked form makes them suitable for inclusion in seed blends for finches, canaries and other compatible smaller birds.

What is the difference between whole and hulled oats?

Whole oats retain their outer husk. Hulled oats have this fibrous covering removed, leaving the softer oat kernel exposed.

Can Avigrain Hulled Oats be fed on their own?

They can be offered separately in small amounts, but they are not a complete food and should not form the entire diet.

Can chickens eat hulled oats?

They may be included as a supplementary grain, but a nutritionally complete poultry feed should remain the main ration.

Can hulled oats be sprouted?

They may not sprout consistently because the grain can be damaged during hull removal. Whole intact oats are generally a more reliable sprouting option.

What sizes are available?

Avigrain Hulled Oats are available in:

  • 1kg

  • 2kg

  • 4kg

  • 20kg
